Why I won't make a Halibut Sweater
One thing that I love about this community and Ravelry is how intertwined we are. The Halibut sweater, created in 2021 by Caitlin Hunter, has taken the internet by storm! It's a gorgeous traditional circular yoke style featuring halibut motifs. It's knit from the top down, and includes options for a turtleneck, mock turtleneck, or crew neck. The pattern is unisex and size-inclusive. The designer has also included notes in the pattern on how to adjust the sleeve and body length for a perfect fit. It's a gorgeous sweater that looks good on everyone, and you can truly make it to your liking. It's currently been knit by almost 2,500 people and is sitting in the queues of 3,000 others. Caitlin Hunter deserves all of this praise from the internet, and I love how many people are sharing their love for this sweater.
Yet, I won't be making one. Why?
I've made quite a few sweaters over the years, some of which have come up on this blog. I enjoy the uniqueness and the thrill of it. My Dancing Aurora is one of my favorite sweaters. It taught me Brioche knitting and was the first time I did a tubular bind off successfully. On the flip side of that, my Autumn Wreath sweater is my least favorite sweater. It's a beautiful, easy lace pattern, and one I highly recommend for knitters who are both new to lace and sweater making. But I learned once it was completed that I didn't like the circular yoke. It was the first time I had made a sweater that wasn't a raglan, and I didn't realize at the time how important fit was to me. I rarely reach for that sweater, even though I love the yarn and I love the design. The lack of structure just makes me feel lost.
Bringing this back to the Halibut Sweater, I've spent many a day watching videos and looking through projects on Ravelry, reading about this sweater. I wanted to share some of the videos that I felt were the most helpful as I learned more about this project. Hopefully, they can help you find out if this sweater is right for you.

It's gorgeous! And it looks good in every color combination. But I know the deep yoke will not sit right on my body. So for now, my goal is to inspire others to take on this adventure and work on projects that I will not only enjoy making but also will wear.
