The hana part of this year’s hanami (at a park near my new home) was slightly anemic (there were two cherry trees in bloom, but hey, when I scouted on Wednesday there were none!)  The food part went well.

The group contained several people who only ate vegetables/fin fish, so the menu kept to that.  I served food in three sections - while gathering at my place I served crudite nibbles - there was enough food that I kept that light, cucumber pickles, tomato, carrots, no dips.  We stayed a bit longer and I served two bento overflow dishes - a mushroom quiche and peppers stuffed with cheese.

When people got itchy to enjoy the first gorgeous spring day (”What spring day?” I asked, “I’ve been inside cooking!”) we brought three jubako (Japanese food boxes) to the park.

Clockwise from top left - baked marinated tofu, rolled Japanese omelet (tamagoyaki) with spinach, vegetable gyoza (bought), fried tofu pouches (abura age) with yam noodle salad, rolled salmon and cream cheese (in a tortilla) and onigiri with either furikake or radish greens.

When the winds got chilly we repaired back to my living room for dessert, chocolate chip cookies, apricot bars, babka and grapes.

Having the challenge to cook a pescatarian meal made me try new dishes and ways of composing a meal, which was great fun.
