US special operations forces have conducted a large-scale counterterrorism raid in northwestern Syria, in what the Pentagon said was a "successful mission."
The Syrian Civil Defence said that at least 13 people were killed, including six children, in shelling and clashes after the raid in northwestern Syria near Atmeh on the Turkish-Syrian border, according to a Reuters report.
Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a brief statement that the mission was a success. “There were no US casualties. More information will be provided as it becomes available.”
Several residents told The Associated Press they saw body parts scattered near the house that was raided in the village of Atmeh, in Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province near the border with Turkey. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals following the raid, which they say involved helicopters, explosions and machine-gun fire.
