On the topic of academic gatekeeping, what do you think would work as a better system to qualify "experts" than the traditional university system? I feel like I have a decent grasp of the myriad of problems that currently exist with academia (at least in the United States), but I'm having trouble thinking of what could replace it.
I think the problem itself doesn't lie specifically in qualifying someone as an expert as much as it does in qualifying studies and logs as quality information.
It's difficult to wrap your head around at a glance because at the very center of the academic world there are "experts" who have studied subject matters the longest or have published the most papers or have the most people vouching for them. If you're able to suspend that model, however, and instead put into place one where experts are not "the people who create the informatiom" and instead are "the people who vet the information," a big bottleneck in academia relaxes.
That, however, creates a much larger bottleneck of "there are only so many people in higher education, though, and with so much more information it would he unreasonable to expect it all to be read".
That one is solved by creating a more information rich world where nobody is barred from entry by means of financial or class based disadvantages.
These are of course ENORMOUS paradigm shifts that are not going to happen soon, and it may not even be perfect, but I think at least having conversations around them are important. Academia is not a monolith or an institution, it is a concept central to human nature, and one that is far too difficult to explore for most of the population.

i hate avocado. it’s gross.
What do you think of the trend of poeple trying to get too close to content creators (on youtube, tumblr, twitter, etc.) and smudging their perception of being a fan versus being a friend? Or, I guess, do you think that is a trend?
I think it’s important people understand that there is a degree of separation between a creator and a fan, I personally try to ensure that I don’t give any false sense of “hey I’m your friend, I’m YOUR close buddy” to my audience because that’s false. It’s a one-way relationship, and I think some creators can manipulate or at least give a false impression that it’s more than that.
With that said, I have friends who started out as “fans,” so I think the most important thing to remember when you’re interacting with a creator you admire is that they’re just a person too. Putting people on pedestals is not the right step to friendship.
