I FINALLY WORKED IT OUT

I finally understand why Alana asking Hannibal to save Will in Digestivo means so much to me.

That was the resolution of the Hannigrambloom love triangle.

Alana might have severed all ties to Hannibal in Mizumono, but she never truly let go of Will. She feels partly responsible for pushing him to the depths of the dark he is dwelling in, and she feels she owes him to help him find his path back to the light. So even as she is forming a new bond with Margot, she is simultaneously holding on to those last strings of Will, but not so much because of sentimentality, but because of a debt.

But by asking Hannibal to save Will, she allows Hannibal to finally severe her ties to Will too. To finally cut her out of the Hannigrambloom triangle, to allow her to move on with her life. But she also puts her debt in Hannibal’s hands, puts her trust in him. She trusts the man who hurt her so severely to save the man they have both loved. She also puts Will in Hannibal’s hands, trust Hannibal enough that he will take care of him, look after him. Love him.

Alana asking Hannibal to save Will was Alana finally stepping out of the Hannigrambloom love triangle. Finally cutting the ties to both Will and Hannibal.

And then the line “Could I have ever understood you?” holds just the hint of sentimentality, just the trace of nostalgia, shows that it was not all in vain. She cared for Hannibal once upon a time, and it’s a time she still cherishes, despite everything. And it shows that despite all the hatred and despise and hurt and betrayal and severed ties, there is still the memory of affection.

Affection she once held for both of these men.

Even though she was never part of their love. Because as Hannibal confirms, no, she could never have understood him. Nor would she have been able to understand Will.

Because even though it might have started with Will and Alana, metamorphosed into Alana and Hannibal, it was always meant to end in Will and Hannibal.
