Glass City Marathon, training begins
Not with a bang but a whimper (more accurately: not with a run but a rest).
Once again, I am using the Hanson’s Advanced Marathon plan to chase a new PR at the Glass City Marathon. The plan, however, starts with two curiously blank days. Day 1 (today) has nothing at all listed and Day 2 is a rest or cross training day. Usually, I just run anyways but I decided to give my body one more day of complete rest before throwing myself into the fray. Nothing hurts, yet, but I have been doing a lot over the past couple of months so one day off certainly won’t do any harm.
I am following the plan and aiming for a 3:25. When I ran Richmond in 3:27:50, I felt like I still had some gas left in the tank. That could have been because I ran a pretty conservative first half but I felt good at mile 26 which has never happened before. So I think a 3:25 is not too much of a stretch in the right conditions.
I’m nervous about a couple of things. My main concern is that I injure myself again. Remember, the week before I broke my toe I had already been derailed by plantar issues. So I really REALLY want to avoid something like that. Which means I am spending a lot more time on preventative, whole body strengthening. I have marbles, I have rollers, I have therabands. I will actually use them.
And then... I am spending over two weeks traveling in January. Usually, it’s just a matter of packing my running shoes and Making it Work but I am not sure what the scene will be like in Zimbabwe. My best case scenario is that the hotels we stay at will have a treadmill. Obviously, I am not planning on spending my entire trip focused on running. If it works, great. If not, well...that’s life. Plus I will be IN ZIMBABWE.
So that’s the general outline: train for 3:25, don’t get hurt. You would THINK I could pull this off without any issues but the world is full of corners waiting to jump out and snap a toe. Happy thoughts :)
