idk if anyone reads my nardo fic seeking peace but im like so invested in this specific area/group of ocs I made and want to info dump so bad because I saw that one panel of Hanzo and Chiyo saying they fought each other and my mind went BRRRR and also like a lot of Bunraku/Kabuki theatre is entertwined with Geisha and prior to Geisha/maiko being a thing, Oiran artistry and my mind went BBRRRR so I have to talk about this HC: So, the puppetry technique is older than the villages, right? So, there's a tradition that dates farther back that Suna puppet corps will travel to specific areas to train their puppet masters in controlling real people, not just puppets, and to do that they essentially will pair up with the maiko of the flower district and perform complicated dances that require a lot of finesse and control especially since these are living people, not puppets. Anyway, it's a big deal for the Suna Puppet Corps to go and do these festivals and seen as a big honor since the origins of the technique come from the theater anyhow.
Anyway, the hanzo part of this is in my fic, there's a border region between the country that has Ame and Kaze and there's ancient town that essentially serves as a gate to the desert, and it's known for a really big pleasure quarter and flower district, and that this would have been one of the places puppetry was developed. But, distance-wise, it's much closer to Ame than it is to Suna.
So, second shinobi war starts, and Hanzo is both trying to keep his village together with all the refugees and also trying to get SOMETHING out of all this bullshit that the 5 villages are doing to his country, and sees an opportunity in just...taking the city from Kaze/Suna. Just straight up starts a huge fight because it's such an important trade-town and area that Kaze losing it would be such a huge loss, and also due to the historical importance in the techniques Suna-nin use, be a big demoralizer.
And I like to think Chiyo was stationed at this town - again, the Puppet Corps had a whole base here, there were so many puppets, we can even say Chikamatsu had lived in the area, so she was here so she could quickly get to the frontlines in the war, and Hanzo just...comes in and sieges the town. She holds it out, of course, but after a few months and so many attempts at completely poisoning their water sources, etc, Chiyo folds and calls a retreat from the region, and Hanzo claims it. My other HC is that Hanzo, wanting to really fuck with Sand, just burned all the puppet theaters in the city, and then burned a memorial to Chikamatsu Monzaemon, where the Ten Puppets were originally displayed. Except Chiyo, before having to retreat, essentially just grabbed the puppets to preserve them because she knew Hanzo was this sort of petty, and just made off with them and THAT's how she has them/has been keeping them safe.
The other HC I have is that this defeat (and Tsunade fucking her poisons up) was what cost her the Kazekage position.
People's lives don't end when they die. It ends when they lose their faith.
