It’s late.
Not the glamorous kind of late where city lights spill golden over champagne flutes and podium smiles. This is the quiet kind—where the world has fallen asleep, and Max is alone on a hotel balcony in a hoodie far too big for him. He pulls his knees up to his chest, socked feet curled on the chair, face tilted toward the dark sky.
He doesn’t cry. Not really. But his eyes are tired. Heavy with something too complicated for a press release.
Daniel doesn’t say anything when he comes out. Just slides the door shut softly behind him and drops into the chair next to him. Not too close. Not too far.
“I saw the race,” Daniel says after a long pause. “Wasn’t your fault.”
Max doesn’t look at him. Just curls tighter. “It doesn’t matter.”
“Matters to me.”
Silence again. The wind is gentle, tugging at the hem of Max’s hoodie like it’s trying to coax him back into motion.
“You always do that,” Max says finally. “Show up. Even when I don’t ask.”
Daniel smiles, crooked and tired. “You don’t have to ask.”
And Max finally glances over, eyes glassy and unreadable, but seeing him in a way that aches.
“I don’t know how to say it,” Max whispers.
“You don’t have to,” Daniel murmurs, leaning forward, elbows on knees, gaze steady. “I hear you anyway.”
He doesn’t reach for Max. Doesn’t crowd him. Just stays. Breathes in time with him. Keeps him tethered when everything else feels like it's spinning out.
And Max, quietly, lets himself lean.
