What made classic Resident Evil so great?!
HappyFunTime and I teamed up to gush about what makes the original Resident Evil titles the perfect mix of scary, entertaining, challenging, and memorable! Come discuss your favorite things about the classics!
Life is Happy Fun Times, Sometimes
When I was in seventh grade, my English teacher, Mr. Tate, would make everyone learn new vocabulary words each week and take a test on them. However, him being him, he wouldn't allow tests or quizzes to be called something as simple as "tests" or "quizzes." He called them "Happy Fun Times" and insisted on all of his students calling them by that name too. We couldn't ask him if there would be a vocab test next week. We had to ask him if there would be a "Happy Fun Time" next week. It was quite something, but clearly that method of teaching stuck with me because I still remember it to this day. (Shortly thereafter my social studies teacher started calling tests "Celebrations of Knowledge" which some of my other teachers thought was great and also began doing, but I digress.)
Anyway, about a month ago that thought randomly popped into my head, and I couldn't help but smile as I remembered Mr. Tate and his deadpan humor and teaching style. Calling tests "Happy Fun Times" may not have actually made them happy or fun, but it at least made the class slightly more enjoyable and lighthearted. I couldn't get the term "Happy Fun Time" out of my head, and all of a sudden I came up a killer name for if I were to ever write an autobiography: Life is Happy Fun Times, Sometimes. It was perfect. It tied my overall perspective on life into something from my past that meant something to me in a kind of humorous way, and all that was left was to write the book. That's quite a bit easier to say than do, however, so I plopped the title down in my "random ideas" note in my Notes app, figured it might come in handy one day, then forgot about it.
Fast-forward to now: as my junior year of college started, I realized that I forgot to bring my journal with me that I've kept since 7th grade. This realization sort of came as a surprise to me because I've gone for very long periods without it before and been fine. I mean, it's a 220-some-page journal that I've been writing in since SEVENTH GRADE. Clearly I don't make a habit of it or anything even close to that. But I try to write in it every now and then, and my goal at this point would be to fill it all the way up by the end of college. However, as this year started, I realized I had so many more thoughts than usual swirling around in my head and nowhere to put them. Talking about them is one thing, but deep down there's always going to be a voice in the back of my head telling me that I should shut up, that I'm bothering whoever I'm talking to, the list goes on and on. I needed somewhere to write it down. So I thought, "why not start a blog?"
I've never been opposed to the idea of having a blog, it's more just that I've never felt a strong pull to starting one. What would I write about? I considered creating another Instagram account to post my "thoughts and feelings" and all that bullshit on, but that would completely go against my goal of trying to get off of social media more. Tumblr, though, doesn't really seem like traditional social media, and since I just needed a place to put my thoughts down while I don't have my journal with me, I figured this was as good a place as ever. So I finally gave in and created a Tumblr account.
I've never been great with usernames, so I began to think way too hard about what to call myself on here. But just as suddenly as it came to me last month, the phrase "Life is Happy Fun Times, Sometimes" came to the forefront of my brain yet again. So without hesitation, I titled the blog "happyfuntimessometimes." Is it a stupid name? I'm sure someone out there thinks so. But who knows if anyone will even ever read this. I'm doing this for myself, and myself only. If I eventually decide to share it more widely, or if someone happens to stumble upon it, be that my friends, strangers on the internet, or literally anyone, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. But I won't worry about how anyone might judge what I write here, because again, I'm doing this for me and me only. And what better way to describe my own life than "Happy Fun Times, Sometimes"?
