Marlowe Movie Master List

Over the last several months, I've not only read every Philip Marlowe novel written by Raymond Chandler, I've also watched every major movie adaptation featuring Philip Marlowe, PI. Now that I've read all 7 of these books and watched all 9 of these movies, I have my definitive review and ranking of these films. Over the next few days/weeks I'm going to share these thoughts in a countdown from worst to best adaptations.

My rating system is based on the following criteria:

Overall adherence to the original Chandler plot

How true the actor is to the character of Philip Marlowe

General film making prowess

How many actors appeared in Perry Mason

I'm going to post my reviews in order of worst film to best, by my judgement. Get excited, folks.

I gave a talk tonight on hardboiled detectives and how Hollywood has flattened the private investigator over the years and it was so much fun! These ideas have been bouncing around in my brain for more than a year now and it felt SO GOOD to finally formally share them with people!

Maybe now I'll finally get around to organizing things in a format that's easier to share here than a slide deck.

I just finished the first episode of the new AMC show Monsieur Spade and boy, do I have thoughts.

Much like the HBO Perry Mason, it's a beautifully made show and a great showcase of prestige television. The cinematography is impeccable, the editing is top notch, and the music is wonderfully done (even hearkening back to the score of the original Maltese Falcon). But the plot makes no damn sense, Clive Owen is far from his best, and there's absolutely no reason at all why the main character is Sam Spade.

I'm going to keep watching it, just for the analysis of it and further developing my noir/pulp essay, but dang.
