What Would Cliff Burton Think About Metallica’s Music If He Was Still Alive? Lars Ulrich Weighs In

During a career-spanning interview on November 5 at 92Y in New York City, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was asked which songs from the band’s “Black”, “Load” and “Reload” albums late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton would have liked. “I’ve got an easy answer: all of ’em,” Lars responded. Next ! No. Listen, it’s a great question. I appreciate that.

“As I grow older, the one thing that I’m so shitty at is the what-if questions. What if this hadn’t happened? Or what if Cliff was still alive? Or what if the Earth was flat instead of round?” he continued. “It’s, like, okay, what if I was sitting over there and you were sitting over here, then we’d have a completely different conversation.

“I think that there would have been an evolution [if Cliff was still in Metallica]. And, obviously, I believe very much that it’s the sum of the parts, the band. So if Cliff was still in the band, something else would have happened and those records would have some sort of different feel to them. It’s the same thing as saying, ‘What if Jason Newsted was still around now? What would [Metallica‘s latest album] ‘Hardwired… [To Self-Destruct]’ sound like?’ You know what I mean? It’s great stuff, but I’m not the guy that can give you definitive answers.

“I think that, like with everything, Cliff was incredibly, incredibly opinionated and was actually quite inspiring to both James [Hetfield, Metallica frontman] and I, because at that time, it was so much about a gang and a kind of collective, and then Cliff would just go… he would use the word ‘I’ a lot more and we would use the word ‘we,’” Lars said. “And so he was just very, sort of like, what he liked, what he didn’t like. But he also rolled along with and understood that there was a part of Metallica that…Maybe he liked ‘Orion’ better than he liked something else. Do you know what I mean? I think that’s totally fine. Being in a collective, being in a group, being in a gang, it means you have to compromise. If not, then go be a solo artist.”

Asked what his feelings were after Burton died, Lars said: “I didn’t slow down long enough to feel. We were, at that age, unequipped to deal with that kind of tragedy and that kind of shock. We just jumped deeper into whatever vodka bottle was close and compartmentalized it.”

Ulrich said that he was never scared that Metallica was going to come to an end after Cliff‘s death “because I think, actually, the way that we dealt with it was that we never made that an option. I don’t think there was ever a conversation that I was part of where we sat and said, ‘What should we do now?’” he explained. “It was more like, ‘How quickly can we get it back on track?’ And we realized very quickly that, at 22 years old, the quicker we got it back on track, the less we would have to deal with it. And it was sort of under the auspice of ‘Cliff would have wanted it that way.’ And I think that, yes, Cliff would have wanted it that way. We may have heard ourselves say that a little too much. But when you’re 22 years old, you don’t know how to deal with this shit.”

Album Review by Bradley Christensen Metallica – Hardwired…To Self-Destruct Record Label: Blackened Release Date November 18 2016

Metallica is arguably the biggest metal band of all time, and something that comes with that is being one of the most polarizing acts, too, and people have a lot of things to say about this band’s body of work. You’ll find some metalheads that only care about the first couple of albums before Cliff Burton was tragically killed in the late 80s, or you’ll have fans that only care about their 80s output. Anything after 1991’s The Black Album is garbage, because they “sold out,” according to them. You have people that enjoy their later work, too, but most fans aren’t into those albums. Metallica haven’t released an album in a very long time, and people were not expecting them to come back with a new record, let alone a good one. When Hardwired…To Self-Destruct was announced, I was rather curious about it, because I’ve enjoyed the few Metallica albums that I’ve listened to. It’s funny, because I’ve only heard their 80s output at this point in time. I haven’t listened to anything after 1988’s And Justice For All, but I’ve wanted to. Another reason I was curious, too, is that I’ve listened to the other albums from “The Big Four” of thrash metal. My favorite of those three was the latest Slayer album, 2014’s Repentless, but I did like the newest Anthrax, 2016’s For All Kings. The only one I hadn’t listened to yet was Metallica’s new album, Hardwired…To Self-Destruct. Part of why I didn’t give this a listen a lot sooner is because it was a double album. I don’t really like long albums as a whole, unless they’re greatest hits albums, and double albums are even worse, because there can be a lot of filler, monotony, and meandering stuff that bores me after awhile. That’s what I was worried about with this album, especially with the critical consensus being that it was good, but it was nothing as great as their “classic” work. That’s to be expected, though, so I’m not shocked to hear that, but I was still somewhat curious about the album.

It’s taken me close to a year to listen to this album, which is kind of good, because the hype’s died down, and I found a copy at FYE for a very cheap price. It was weird, because the album was brand new, but it was touted as used, so I’m guessing someone brought in a copy they never opened, because they got it as a gift, or they had another copy. Either way, that’s good news for me, because the album was cheaper than it normally would have been. I thought I’d pick it up, because I mean, the album is cheap, and it’s the new Metallica album, so why not? Even if I wasn’t crazy about it, I’d give it a few listens. I’ve done just that over the last week, actually, so how I feel about this thing? Well, the shorthand would be that I like this album, as it’s surprisingly quite good, but it doesn’t hold a candle to their classic material. Yeah, that’s to be expected, like I said, but this album is surprisingly good. Metallica came back with a solid record that’s a good mix between their early material and their more traditional heavy metal sound in later albums, which I really like, because it’s not too heavy, but it’s also not too soft, boring, and limp, either. This LP has a lot of interesting and aggressive guitarwork, but that’s about all it has. That’s my biggest issue right there: why was this a double album? I don’t understand why this album is 77 minutes, across two discs, because there’s no reason for it. The first disc of this record is great, honestly, and the album is non-stop adrenaline, but when the album hits its second disc, well, I find myself zoning out for awhile. The last couple of songs, though, are surprisingly awesome, and they pull me right back in, but the middle of this album just doesn’t do much for me. If the album was around an hour, or even 50 minutes, this LP would have made a bigger impact, but this doesn’t need to be a two-disc record.

Make no mistake, I like this album, as everything sounds quite good. Guitarist and frontman James Hetfield sounds quite good, and the instrumentation itself is really solid, even coming through with some interesting lyrics, but this sounds like, well, “generic Metallica.” They don’t quite do anything that you haven’t heard before on earlier albums, but at the same time, everything is done well, so I can’t say it’s bad. It’s really not, but the album is way too long for its own good. It really doesn’t need to be so long. I’m very much into the first disc, though, and the last couple tracks on the second disc. Hell, just combine those songs, and take off the few songs in the middle of the album on the second disc, you’d be okay, and the album would be awesome. It would still be generic Metallica, but it would be awesome. I’m not saying this album is yearend worthy, either, as I don’t know if I would have put it on that list, because it’s not an album I’m super crazy about. I like it, though, and the good stuff is really good. There are some great moments, but that’s the key word – “moments.” The album itself goes in peaks and valleys, because a lot of it is great, but the stuff that drags just brings the album for me. It’s cool to hear a new Metallica album, though, and truthfully, the band sounds great here. They haven’t lost a step, but that’s the thing. This LP doesn’t go anywhere or do anything that their other albums didn’t do. This album feels like it would be worth the time and listen of Metallica fans, more than anyone else. I wouldn’t say this as a jumping on point, because it’s not classic Metallica. This doesn’t show the best of the band, even though you get a decent idea, but listen to their early work, or even The Black Album, because that shows you what the band is all about. I’m happy that I picked this up, and I’ve given it a few listens, but that’s all it needs. If the album were shorter, I’d be listening to it a lot more, but as it stands, the album’s solid, but because of the songs that drag on, and that aren’t all that interesting, I can’t say the album itself is great.
