Tears. There were tears falling down the kids face and Kakashi was even more confussed by his words.

I’ve waited so long.

None of it made any sense.

“Go,” he waved the anbu guard away, glaring when they didn’t immediately turn around and leave. “I do not need your company taking care of this.”

“But, Lord sixth-“

“No,” he waved them away “out.”

There was a huff but then the operative was gone. kakashi had no doubt they would be complaining about him in the Anbu locker room later, but he didn’t care all that much.

It was healthy to vent about things. Even if those ‘things’ were their Hokage.

“Now,” he knelt down in front of the kid and smiled. “Why don’t you take a deep breath and explain this to me. I’m afraid I’m a bit lost on the issue.”

One day Sasuke just fucking collapses during training

Kakashi reacts without though, placing himself directly in front of Sasuke so that when he falls he lands against his back.

“Over working yourself again?” He teased, silently wondering if Rin had been right to scold him for pushing his students too hard. “Ma, time to get you home I guess.”

“So… you’ve actually taken on a team and not failed them for once I hear.”

Kakashi refrained from biting back at Shikaku and defending his choices to fail the other teams. He'd already had this conversation far too many times for his comfort.

"They proved that they could work as a team," he whispered, deciding to just move forward with the conversation. "it was a little...rough at first, but they got there in the end."

and for that he was proud of them.

A new student. Just what he didn't need.

Wasn't Lord Third already satisfied with his punishment? He had Haruno 'Never let him live a mistake down' Sakura, Uchiha 'Ready to commit murder' Sasuke and Uzumaki 'Never know what he's going to do next' Naruto as his students already.

How was he supposed to support and nourish a new student? A student from the Land of Iron, to be precise.

If that wasn't bad enough, he was being handed this new responsibility right after his bell test. If he did the bell test again Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura would simply tell their new teammate what to do, but if he didn't do the bell test he wouldn't know if the kid would be able to have teammates.

He couldn't just chuck a new person into the mix, yet that was exactly what he was expected to do.

"Ma, maybe he'll be less of a headache," he whispered to himself, watching the gates of Konoha for any sign of his new student and the entourage that would probably be coming with him. "That would be a nice change of pace."

He still couldn't understand why Lord Third had chosen him for the job. Surely there was a Shinobi who didn't have students able to take on the task. Part of him's not surprised, though.

No matter how many times he said he didn't want more responsibility, Lord Third and the Elders always seemed to ignore him. As if his own doubt in his abilities didn't matter to them at all.

“Ugh… it’s so damn hot… you’d think we could have aircon in the tower of all places…”

Using a small stack of reports, Kakashi fanned himself in a desperate attempt for a few seconds of relief from the sweltering heat.

“I don’t recall it ever being this bad in here,” he grumbled under his breath, wondering if he’d just been gone during the hotter days and missed this new form of self torture until now, or if the world was punishing him in a new and interesting way. “I’m going to need to redirect resources here for a while.”

Get an aircon system up as soon as possible. The train could wait a few more days if it meant everyone in the tower wasn’t dying from heat stroke,

“Just leave me alone”

“Come on,” The three year old poked Shikaku in the side, trying desperately to get his attention. “Play with me.”

All he wanted to do was throw some shuriken. Why was Shikaku so upset with him about it?

“ how long have i been asleep? ”  

Dragging his eyes away from his book, Kakashi refrained from smiling when he saw Shikaku staring at him from his bed.

“Three days,” he answered, keeping his voice calm as he closed his book and set it down on his lap. “I think Yoshino was preparing to take drastic measures if you didn’t wake up soon.”

Shikaku passed Shikamaru over to Kakashi so that the boy would stop whining.

“He always misses his big brother Kakashi.” Shikaku smiled as Shikamaru immediately reached up for Kakashi’s mask

“And how will you ever know if you don’t try? There are plenty of shinobi in the village, and yet you were asked to lead. Not just anyone can do it, but I believe that you can. Do you doubt my judgement or just your own?”

"I miss him too," Kakashi whispered as he fixed Shikamaru in his arms so that he was comfortable, completely ignoring the fact that the child was already tugging on his mask. "Alright, just let me-"

reaching up, he tugged his mask down to his chin so Shikamaru could see his face and immediately stuck his tongue out at him. "better?"

Shikaku's words sank in slowly, the weight of his words sinking into his chest. "I didn't mean...I trust your judgment," he whispered. "I'm just not sure I can live up to who you think I am."
