i think that hawkfrost’s behavior towards stormfur was a way of coping. he was trying to forget everything left of his mother, and also lashing out at stormfur to deal with feathertail’s death.

he read feathertail (and stormfur) leaving to go on the journey as yet another close ally abandoning him... except she never comes back so he can’t even deal with his baggage.

he had already started self-sabotaging himself with mothwing (sub-consciously), through his lying and manipulation. he knew deep down that eventually she would reject him for his cruelty, and when she did he would blame her. he would be able to tell himself that she abandoned him, just as he told himself that he was only ever trying to help her.

hawkfrost was pulling himself away from everybody who cared about him, until the only cat in his support system was tigerstar himself. and this is exactly what his father wanted.
