Hello, my lovely readers. There is a really minor crossover-ish moment in this chapter with Legacies. On with the show…
Chapter 11: It's Okay to Cry
The Mikaelson compound was quiet when Stefan arrived. He shoved his hands deep in his pockets before he headed through the courtyard. Soon after he entered, he heard the sound of footsteps behind him. Turning, Stefan came face-to-face with Klaus. Klaus' face was rigid and Stefan could see that the Original Hybrid was livid.
"Come back to assess the damage, Ripper, old mate, or have you come to inflict more on one of the only poor souls to make the unfortunate mistake of calling you 'friend?'" Klaus' eyes bore into Stefan's and Stefan stood still.
"Klaus, I'm sorry for what I did to Caroline. I wasn't myself. But right now I need to see Hayley." Stefan began when Klaus held up a hand, silencing Stefan.
Narrowing his eyes, Klaus' temper peeked through and Stefan could tell that Klaus intended on doing something to avenge Caroline. "Klaus, let him go!" Caroline called from one of the balconies.
The blonde girl looked tired and unhappy as she sped down from the second floor to the courtyard. She stopped two feet from Stefan. Apparently she did not trust him to not attempt to hurt her, again. "Caroline," Stefan said. He had a lot of things he wanted to say to his friend but she held up a hand, shaking her head at him.
"Don't. Whatever you're about to say, just don't!" Caroline's hand shook before she dropped it and slipped it under the wrap she was wearing. "I don't care. I don't want an apology right now. Whatever you have to do, go do it, and then we'll go home. Or you stay here. I really don't care." Turning her back on him, Caroline strode from the courtyard and back into the house.
Turning to look at Klaus, Stefan saw the delight and pride on Klaus' face. "Well, there you have it, mate. She's made up her mind about you. For the time being. I suggest you get on with it then." With a smirk, Klaus left Stefan alone.
Sighing, Stefan trudged into the house. He had not expected a warm welcome. He did something pretty awful and he would have to work hard to gain Caroline's trust.
Stopping outside of Hayley's room, Stefan did not find her. He kept going, sensing her, somewhere in the home. He did not have to go far. Hayley stood inside a nursery. Her hands were locked around the side of the crib. Her lower lip wobbled and she was straining to retain control over herself.
Stefan knew what it was like to keep a flood of emotions locked, deep inside him, allowing the pain to fester until you poured it outward and usually that did not end well for whoever you were pouring that pain into. And if you didn't release it, it could envelope you and consume you, until there was nothing left.
"Hayley," Stefan said softly, tapping on the door with his knuckles.
Hayley's head rose, her dark hair falling down her back as she turned to stare back at Stefan. "Freya helped you?" she asked him, her voice low. She was teetering on the edge. Stefan intended on pushing her over the brink. And being there to catch her.
"She did," Stefan replied. Stepping inside the room; he looked around. "This would have been your daughter's room?" His eyes moved to the painting over the crib. "I take it Klaus decorated."
"He did. It's one of the nicest things he's ever done for me." Hayley's mouth closed and Stefan saw her tip a little further. "I didn't think he was capable of loving our baby. I thought he was a monster, that my child would have no chance with him as her dad. I thought… And now we'll never know. We'll never know what kind of parents we could have been. And I…" Just a little bit more.
Stefan moved to breach the distance and took Hayley in his arms. "It's okay. You can let it out now. You can feel it. You can feel all of it, because you're not alone, Hayley."
For a second, Stefan thought Hayley would allow him in; so he could help her heal. Then she pushed him away, knocking him into the wall behind him. "No! You do not get to 'Help me cope!' You weren't there! You don't know how this feels! You don't what I had to give up!" Stopping, Hayley's flushed cheeks turned a rosier hue and her eyes widened.
Confused, Stefan held out his arms. "Tell me what you gave up, Hayley. It's okay. You can trust me."
"No! No! No, Stefan!" Hayley backed away, toward the window and Stefan thought that she might throw it open and fling herself outward. "I can't tell you. This is… You can't help me!" She was panicking. Stefan was losing his ability to help her and to be able to pull her back from the brink when she fell.
"Hayley, tell me!" Stefan took slow, hesitant steps across the floor, toward the hybrid who had begun to shake all over. Stefan thought she might change. She might bite him.
"No. No," Hayley moaned as Stefan slid his arms around her. "Please, I don't. I can't. Don't…" Tears ran down her cheeks as she fell into his body. Rocking her back and forth, Stefan closed his eyes and hushed her, running his fingers through her hair and down her back. "Don't make me tell you what happened…"
In a flash, Stefan entered Hayley's mind. He stood in a church. St. Anne's Cathedral. Hayley lay on her back. Two teenage girls and a woman were holding her down. Hayley was screaming, in pain and in fear. Stefan could only watch as the events unfolded, helpless to stop what the witches did to her. Helpless to aid Klaus when he stormed inside.
The flashes of memory died away and Hayley awoke. She sat up and Stefan saw her new hybrid state. He remembered the confusion. The fear. The overwhelming hunger for blood. He saw the look of concentration on her face when she left the church.
"Your baby lived," Stefan whispered, still caught up in Hayley's memories of the past as she led him through them.
Hayley nodded against his chest as they continued through the fight for the baby. Hayley's rage. Marcel's saving the child. The memories came faster and faster until Stefan was watching Hayley hold her child. "Hope."
Opening his eyes, Stefan held Hayley away from him. "That's why you can't let go. To allow yourself to grieve for her loss. Because she's not dead. Because you can bring her home."
"But I can't, Stefan. It's not safe here! Klaus' enemies, they'll come for her, and they'll keep coming until my baby girl is really dead." Hayley gulped down a sob. "She'll never be safe. Not until we end every last one of his enemies and then we can bring her back."
"But you don't think it can be done." Stefan gripped Hayley's upper arms. "You think it's a never-ending parade of vampires, witches, wolves and humans who would seek the end of this family. The Mikaelsons have lived too long, taken too much, and caused too much misery. Hope's legacy is to inherent millions of enemies, world-wide and you think she will never know a moment's peace once they know she lives?" Stefan stroked Hayley's cheek.
"Yes," Hayley admitted. "I think I can't ever bring her home."
"Oh, Hayley." Stefan brought Hayley's head to his shoulder. "You can help her show those who would be her enemies that she doesn't mean them harm. You can build a new future. A better life for her. Don't let her turn into a monster by not being a monster. Show her love. Show her kindness."
Hayley nodded. "But the world is not full of love and kindness. Especially for someone new. Someone who never existed before. They will see her difference. They will fear her, mock her and loath her."
"And she will come home to you and you will kiss away her tears and tell her that she is the most special girl in the entire world, because you are her mother and you love her more than anyone." Stefan leaned back to look into Hayley's eyes. "Can you do something for me?"
"Yes." Hayley nodded, brushing away her tears with the back of her hand.
"Close your eyes," Stefan said. "And let go. Don't worry. I'll catch you."
"Okay." Hayley closed her eyes and opened her mind to him.
Closing his own eyes, Stefan placed his hands on either side of her face. "Breathe. Slow and deep. In and out. Now, open your eyes."
Hayley opened her eyes and looked around. "Where are we?" she asked him.
"My house," Stefan said.
"Mom?" a teenage girl said. Her long hair flew behind her back as her eyes lit up and a smile spread across her face. "Mom!" she cried, running to Hayley, down the main hallway of Stefan's home. "You're here!"
"Hi, baby," Hayley said, clutching her daughter in her arms. "Oh, my! You are so big now! And you're so beautiful!"
"Mom, I missed you so much!" Hope said, tears running down her cheeks.
Hayley nodded. "I missed you, too. But I'm here now. And I'm not going to let you go. Never again." She pressed a kiss to Hope's forehead before looking over her shoulder at Stefan. "Thank you," she whispered.
Stefan nodded and he felt a hand on his shoulder. "Hey there, baby bro." Damon leaned against the wall and Hayley grinned. Since they were in her head, Hayley must have conjured up Damon. "Looks like you're being the do-gooder, again."
"Looks like," Stefan retorted with a grin. He turned his attention back to Hayley and Hope. "Because this isn't just a vision. Hayley is going to see her child again. And Hope is going to grow up. They're going to find peace. Because they're not monsters."
"Unlike some of us, right, Ripper?" Klaus purred and Stefan looked at Klaus who was watching Hope and Hayley as they talked quietly about the boy that Hope liked. Klaus' smile turned to a frown. "You think my daughter will not have higher pursuits than boy-chasing?"
Stefan shrugged. "I think Hope will be many things. None of us know for sure what she'll be. But I think she'll know she's loved. By both her parents. You want to get in there and see your daughter?"
Klaus nodded and went to join Hope and Hayley. "Hello. May I?" He looked to Hayley for permission and she nodded. "Hello, Hope. I'm father." His expression showed his fear of Hayley's and Stefan's version of his daughter.
"Hi, daddy," Hope said, throwing her arms around him. "I missed you so much!"
Pausing, Stefan wondered if maybe he and Hayley were not the only ones in control of this vision. He thought he felt the tugging of someone else's mind, and not just Klaus,' at work here. Hope peered over her father's shoulder at Stefan and nodded. Her smile reminded him of Klaus in a better mood. And the concentration in her eyes… No. That was impossible. A teenage Hope Mikaelson could not be reaching out to them, through time and space.
Pulling back, Hope touched her parent's cheeks. "I love you both, very much," she swore, her smile lighting up the dim hallway. The sound of distant chatter of children in the background sounded and Hope looked behind her.
Stefan noted the small "S" on Hope's sweater and the pleated private school skirt. She held up a finger, indicating silence from Stefan. "I have to go now," Hope said softly, taking a step backwards.
"Hope, don't go!" Hayley cried out. Reaching out for her daughter. Klaus took her hand and she sighed.
Opening his eyes, Stefan looked up to see Klaus standing over them. His hand clutched Stefan's shoulder and then he sped away. Stefan felt tears on his shirt from Klaus.
Hayley's eyes opened and she began to sob. "I miss her so much."
"She's coming back," Stefan whispered, rubbing her back. "You just need to be strong for now." And he needed to take his own advice. Be strong and patient and hope that Damon would find his way back.
Hello, my lovely readers. I want to say, "Thank you," to all of you lovely people and "Thank you, Rune Saint," for creating this challenge. On with the show…
Epilogue: Everyone Needs Some Help, Sometimes
For the first time in months, Hayley Marshall woke feeling rested and relaxed. She sat up in her own bed, at the Mikaelson compound, stretching and then sat up straighter. Someone was just outside her door. She could sense his presence. She always thought she would know he was near.
"Elijah," Hayley called.
"Good morning, Hayley. Rest well?" Elijah inquired, as polite as ever on his way into her bedroom. His suit was pressed to perfection and she felt an ache in the pit of her stomach while his eyes studied everything but her.
"Yes. Actually, I did. Thanks for asking." Pushing herself off the bed, Hayley noted Elijah turn away from her. She was wearing a shirt and panties in her sleep. With a roll of her eyes, she sped around the room, slipping into a pair of jeans and T-shirt. "Did you want something?"
Elijah glanced back at her and then turned to face her. His eyes met hers. "Yes. It appears your friend, Mr. Salvatore and Ms. Forbes are on their way back to Mystic Falls. I thought, perhaps, you would like to say 'Good-bye.'"
Hayley inhaled sharply. "Already?"
"It appears so," Elijah replied, his tone low, his eyes on the floor again.
"Elijah." Hayley crossed the floor and took his hand. "You know that what happened between me and Stefan had nothing to do with us, right?" She tried to get him to make eye contact.
"Hayley, I can assure you, I do not feel jealous. I understand what you sought from Stefan. He helped you…" Elijah's expression closed off. "We should go down now. They'll leave momentarily." Without another word, Elijah sped out of the room.
With a sigh, Hayley followed the repressed Original brother. Downstairs Hayley found Stefan looking for her. "Hi," she said, feeling shy and tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Hi," Stefan said. His smile made her roll her eyes. She felt like a teenage girl with her first boyfriend. "I guess this is where we say good-bye." He held out a hand and Hayley looked at it with wide eyes.
Stefan looked at his hand and shook his head before he crossed the distance, took her in his arms and kissed her. Throwing her arms around his neck, Hayley kissed Stefan, knowing it would be for the last time and how much this memory would mean to her. "Thank you, for everything," Hayley whispered into his ear.
"You're welcome," Stefan replied. He turned to Klaus. "Sorry about making such a mess down here."
"I would say that I wish you would come back soon," Klaus retorted and then he smirked. "Good luck, mate." Grabbing Stefan, he hugged him before stepping back and standing next to Hayley. "It's time, Elijah."
Hayley's eyes darted to Elijah. "What are you going to do?"
"He has been compelled to, love," Klaus said, resting a hand on Hayley's arm.
"Oh." Hayley looked at Stefan.
Stefan smiled. "It's okay. I'll remember our time together, one day."
Elijah stepped in front of Stefan and looked deeply into his eyes. "You will not remember that you came to New Orleans and spent time with Hayley. You will not remember the words exchanged between myself, Klaus or any of the Mikaelsons. You came here, and you stayed in a hotel. You met a funny bartender named Cami. She seemed nice. The names Marcel Gerard, Davina Claire and Josh mean nothing to you."
"Tell him he will remember that he is at peace as he searches for his brother," Hayley added and Elijah did as she asked.
Klaus looked at Caroline. "You will have forgotten our time together, too, Caroline."
"Why?" Hayley looked from Klaus to Caroline.
Klaus looked at Hayley. "I can't have her remembering me in this state." He looked at his hands and the annoyance was clear.
Groaning, Hayley knew it was pride thing. Caroline came to place a hand on Hayley's arm. "It's okay, Hayley. When Klaus told me what he needed me to do; I agreed. We both know how pig-headed Klaus can be. Sometimes it's better to just go with his whim." Grinning, Caroline squeezed Hayley's arm and Hayley had a vision of Caroline injecting herself with vervain that morning.
"I'm ready, Elijah," Caroline said. She stood with a calm that Hayley now knew the source of.
"You came with your friend, Stefan, to help him forget his worries over his brother. It was a wonderful vacation. You did not see the Mikaelsons. You did not look for us. You were not interested in seeing Klaus. You needed to get back to your old life. In fact, you could not get back quickly enough," Elijah added before looking at Klaus who nodded.
Yup, all of Elijah's words for Caroline came straight from Klaus. Rolling her eyes, Hayley clasped her hands in front of her. She wanted to hug Stefan, one more time, but he and Caroline had turned to leave already.
Closing her eyes, Hayley waited. When she opened them again, Stefan and Caroline were gone.
With a sigh, Hayley let her head fall forward and she went back to her room. On the bed, she found a note. Picking it up, she opened it to find that Stefan had written her a letter.
Dear Hayley,
Although our time together was brief I know that I will carry you with me for the rest of my life. You are stronger than you know. Your love will help you achieve whatever you must to bring your daughter home.
One day, I hope we might see each other again. One of us will be on one side of a city street, and the other will be on the opposite. We will smile and nod. I will cross over to you. And we sit down and have a drink. You'll tell me about Hope and show me pictures of her. And I will tell you about the day we brought Damon home.
Your friend,
Stefan Salvatore
Hayley began to laugh and folded the piece of paper, slipping it into a drawer. She knew she would come back to it, over the years, to remind herself of a time she drew strength from Stefan and know that he would be there if she ever needed him, again.
The End

Hello, my lovely readers. We're moving closer to the end of this tale. I do hope that you enjoy how things unravel. On with the show…
Chapter 10: Frazzled, Frayed and Frozen
Light shone in from a spot that Stefan could not make out. His eyelids felt swollen, like someone had knocked him out. Did they? Did he deserve it? In this state, probably. However, the Ripper did not care. His eyes darted around the room. Room? Nice word for this place.
Sitting up with a groan, Stefan rubbed the back of his head and attempted a smile. "Hey there," he called to the witch from last night.
Her dark blonde hair fell back from her face when she looked up from her table. "You're awake," she replied drily. With a smirk she moved around the table, approaching him without fear.
Stupid, pretty lady, Stefan felt his hunger take control and he launched himself at her. He could already feel her warm blood coursing into his mouth, filling his veins with a course of magic.
Lips peeling back from her teeth, the woman's eyes darkened and Stefan dropped to his knees, his head on fire and she held her right fist before her in a ball. Everything about the tension in her body told him how much damage she wanted do to him. But she was holding back, which was interesting and not worth considering until she relieved the pain.
"Alright. Alright. I'll be a good boy," Stefan shouted, eyes screwing up.
And just like that the pain stopped. Falling on his hands and knees, Stefan began to pant before he lifted his head and laughed. "Wow! That was a rush. How'd you learn to do magic like that?"
"My aunt, Dahlia," the woman said. "You probably don't remember last night." Turning, she returned to her table where she lit a candle and began to concentrate on a map.
Forcing himself to his feet, Stefan came over to look at the map. "And this is?"
"None of your business," the woman said. She offered him another smirk before standing up. "I promised Hayley that I would help you."
"Oh. Where is Hayley?" Stefan glanced around the room for his partner in crime. He was not sure he liked being left alone with Gilda, the not-so-nice witch.
The witch answered after a pause as if she was considering what to tell him. "She's at the compound. It seems you hurt someone Klaus cares for and Hayley is trying to smooth over the tension. And I need something there."
"Right." Stefan turned to grin at the woman. "And you are?"
"Freya. Freya Mikaelson." Her eyes bore into his and Stefan felt his smile twitch. "Something wrong, Stefan?"
"Nope." Stefan shook his head. "I just used to be involved with Rebekah. That's it."
"Oh." Freya cocked her head to the side. "It seems that my siblings have poor taste in men and women."
Stefan could not help but laugh. "Wow. Insulting me after knowing me for five minutes. Now, I know you're a Mikaelson."
Freya returned to her table. "I've made you something to calm you down. And, before you ask: No, you don't have a choice. You will drink it. And we will proceed from there." Picking up a bowl of who-knew-what, Freya strode around the table and came to stand before him with what might be a smile if there weren't a glint of malice intent in her eye.
"You don't think I'm stupid enough to drink that, do you?" Stefan's intent was to knock the bowl from her hand when he found himself on the floor, again, clutching his head and screaming.
"I do not have time to play games with you. My family is my first priority, Stefan. I will do anything for them. Elijah asked me to help Hayley. So, I am helping you, for her. Now, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way." Freya knelt to look him in the eye and Stefan could tell that she did not care about which choice he made.
Grabbing the bowl, Stefan drank the contents down and then the bowl slipped from his fingers. He did not have time to relish the taste of the witch's blood which she had added to the list of ingredients. "Let me into your mind, Stefan, allow me to help you be free."
Freya's fingers moved over Stefan's temples as he fell onto his back, his body slumping into the wooden floor. He could not move if he wanted to. "Show me what is haunting you," she said, her tone soft.
"Hey, Stef," Damon's voice called from the darkness and light began to appear.
Stefan found himself lying on a couch in the Boarding House. "Damon?" Stefan shot to his feet.
"Yeah, baby bro," Damon came into sight. He grinned at Stefan. "Miss me?"
Feeling like he was on the edge of tears, Stefan shook his head. "This is a trick. This is Freya's spell." He backed away from Damon when a hand came down on his arm. Turning, Stefan glared at Freya. "Stop this!" he shouted at her. His hands wound around her slender neck and he pressed his fingers into her flesh. "Stop this now!"
"If you kill me here, I can't bring us back," Freya choked out.
Releasing her, Stefan shook his head. "I can't do this," he gasped.
"You have to. It's the only way to be free," Freya told him. "Face your brother. Whatever happened. You must face it, or he will continue to haunt you."
"You don't understand," Stefan snapped.
"Oh come on!" Damon shouted from behind Stefan. "What's there to understand? My do-gooder brother can't deal with my being dead and so he loses his shit. Goes out, kills some people. Stops caring about the consequences. It feels good to be bad, doesn't it, Stef?"
"No!" Stefan shouted, shaking his head. "This is who I'm meant to be. This has nothing to do with you." Stefan sped out of the Great Room and out the front door.
"Stefan," a new voice made Stefan stop and he felt horrified when he saw Bonnie Bennett. "It's not your fault. You died. Damon died. Elena died. I died. I made a choice. I gave you a second chance. And this what you do with it?" Her frown made Stefan feel sick.
"You're right. You're dead!" Stefan shouted at Bonnie. "So, you can't really be here. You can't make me feel guilty!" Striding past Bonnie, Stefan moved further away from the house.
"What about Elena?" Damon cried. Stefan jerked to stop as Damon appeared right in front of him. "She lost me, too. She's grieving, too. Did it occur to you, while you're being a lot more me than you, that you're being a real dick? Huh?" Damon widened his eyes at Stefan before he gave him a shove.
The shove made Stefan rock backward before Damon gave him another shove that sent him falling on his ass. This felt a lot more real than Stefan had expected. And now he felt pissed off. He looked over his shoulder. "You can end this now, Freya. You're not helping me."
Freya looked from Stefan to Damon. "I did not send your brother here. You did. Now, you must confront how you feel, or we will never leave."
"What the hell did you do?" Stefan shouted at her. But he did not have time to continue his argument with the witch because Damon had taken hold of his shirt collar and jerked him to his feet. "Damon, get off of me!" Stefan shouted.
"Make me," Damon growled back, his eyes alight with amusement. "Kick my ass, Stefan. Not like it's going to hurt me. I'm already dead."
With a growl, Stefan reared back and punched Damon in the jaw. Damon let out a laugh. "Now that's more like it." Waving his hands, he began to circle Stefan. "Come on, baby bro. Let it all out!"
Letting out a cry of rage, Stefan hit Damon again, and again, and again. He stood over his older brother who continued to laugh at him, even as blood poured down from his nose and his eye swelled shut. "Is that all you've got, man? I thought I taught you to fight harder than that. Maybe you're still on the bunny blood."
"Aw!" Stefan shouted, taking a boot and kicking Damon as hard as he could.
Damon gurgled and then let out another laugh. "Now, that's more like it." He paused before pushing himself to his feet and nodding. "More."
Stefan shook his head. "No! This isn't real!"
"No, Stef! No, none of this is real! Because I am dead!" Damon let out another laugh, blood dribbling onto his shirt front. "Dead. And buried. And gone. And I'm not coming back. Am I? Huh?" Chuckling, Damon launched himself at Stefan. "And you just can't accept reality."
Rolling around in the grass, Stefan remembered fighting with Damon when they were younger. Of course Damon almost always won because he was older and stronger. Until they became vampires. Then, when Stefan was on the human stuff, then he had half a chance against his older brother.
"I'm dead!" Damon shouted in Stefan's face when Stefan pinned him to the ground. "D. E. A. D."
Shaking his head, Stefan grabbed a tree branch and shoved it into Damon's gut. "Shut up!" he shouted. "Just shut up!"
Knocking Stefan off with a backhanded smack across the face, Damon stood up and pulled the branch up. "Accept the truth!" He twirled the branch and then launched it at Stefan who dropped to his knees when it penetrated his heart. He felt death beginning to trail through his body. "Damon?" he called.
Damon came to kneel beside him. "I'm sorry," Stefan choked out. "I'm so sorry." He felt tears beginning to pool in his eyes again. He wanted to fight it. He wanted to fight all of the guilt, and confusion, and hate he'd felt.
"You didn't kill me, Stefan," Damon said, pulling the branch out and tugging Stefan into a sitting position.
"I could have helped you. I could have stayed on The Other Side, with you. We could have faced whatever came next together." Stefan grabbed at Damon's shoulders. "Please, don't leave. Don't. I can't live, Damon. I am so sorry I made you into a vampire. But I couldn't live without my big brother. And I still can't do this. Not without you. Don't go!"
Feeling like he did when their mother died and left them alone with their father; Stefan clung to Damon. He knew this was not really his brother, but he just could not face a life without Damon in it.
"Time to grow up, brother. Time to stand on your own. Caroline needs you. And Elena. Hayley needs you to be your annoyingly heroic self to help her see that she doesn't have to cut herself from the pain. Grief is natural. Been there, done that. Suck it up and deal with it," Damon hugged Stefan. "I love you, Stefan."
"I love you, too," Stefan held onto Damon until his eyes fluttered open to find himself back in Freya's room.
"Are you alright?" Freya asked him quietly.
Sitting up, Stefan blinked away tears. "Yeah. I'm going to be. I think." He felt like his old self. The Ripper was buried once again. But the pain, it stabbed through Stefan. He wondered if he could move past it or be any use to his friends.
There was only one way to find out.
"Freya, can you take me to the compound?" Stefan said, getting to his feet.
"And hopefully Niklaus will be in a forgiving mood for whatever it is that you did," Freya replied with a smirk.
"Or I'll be seeing Damon a lot sooner than I plan to," Stefan replied with a chuckle.

Hello, my lovely readers. I realized that I forgot to introduce two major characters to this plot. On with the show…
Chapter 9: Can't Get You Out of My Mind
Hayley could tell that Stefan was rattled. And tonight could not be the night that he lost complete control. In every direction humans gathered, laughing and dancing the night away. Another festival. More partying. Plenty of food. If Stefan caused a scene, they could be discovered—and Hayley might not care about a lot right now but she would not risk never seeing her baby girl again. Not even for whatever she and Stefan were to each other at this point.
"This way." Hayley used Stefan's firm grip on her arm against him, propelling him in a swift arc toward an alleyway, far from the throng of people.
"Buzz kill," Stefan groaned, his eyes glowing darkly and his fangs glinting in the half moon's light. "Why are you raining on my parade, Hayley?" Turning to her, Stefan gave Hayley a look that might be scary to anyone else.
"Because I still want to live," Hayley snapped, pausing and watching a young couple. They headed toward the alley, their hands and mouths engaged in a probing search. "And it looks like we're about to get delivery." She waited, eyes on the couple, before she pressed Stefan against the wall and began to kiss his neck.
"Dinner or sex?" Stefan groaned.
"Oh, I'm sorry," the young woman cried out. She let out a loud giggle. Her long blonde curls fell around her face as she bumped into her boyfriend, or whatever he was to her. "We didn't know this spot was oc-cu-pie-d." The girl obviously had too many drinks and she rolled her eyes. "I guess we're going to have to take this somewhere else."
The girl's body pivoted and she started to turn to the boy when Stefan sped forward, grabbing her by the shoulder. "Actually, I think you should stay. The party's just getting started."
"Hey, lay off her, man!" the boy snapped.
Laughing, Stefan showed the boy his teeth and Hayley moved to join him. "I don't think I want to," Stefan cocked his head to the side while the girl looked from Stefan and Hayley to her boyfriend, her hands bunched into fists. Now, she looked less afraid than Hayley expected her to be. No, she looked downright pissed off.
"Leave us alone," the girl snapped. "We don't want trouble." Her hand slipped into her pocket and she removed a gun. "But that doesn't mean that we won't fight back." She cocked the gun and pointed it at Stefan.
"Tanya, babe. We can't kill them," the boy said, moving to push his girlfriend's hand down, but Tanya stepped to the side, still aiming at Stefan's heart. "Tanya." The boy looked exasperated.
"Yeah, Tanya, put the gun down," Stefan taunted the girl. "All you're going to do is get yourself hurt." He darted forward and then cried out when Tanya pulled the trigger.
"The bullets are laced with vervain, genius," Tanya hissed. "You think I live here and don't know about how to protect myself from your kind?" she demanded, pointing the gun at Hayley.
Hayley snarled and grabbed Romeo by his shirt collar. "Shoot me and lover boy's dead. Got me?" she snapped at the stupid human.
"Marcel will kill you for killing a fellow vampire," the boy told Hayley, revealing his own set of fangs.
Hayley glanced at the boy pinned to the wall and then at Tanya. "You're dating a vamp?" she questioned the girl.
Tanya nodded. "Yeah. Are you one of those vamps who has a problem with human-vamp dating, because I don't take kindly to intolerance?" Her eyes burned with anger as Hayley continued to hold onto the girl's boyfriend, not quite sure what to do with him yet.
"I used to date a human," Stefan said, pushing himself to his feet and panting. "Elena. She started dating my brother, Damon."
"I'm sorry," Tanya said, but she did not lower the gun. "But all we want is to go home. Now, let him go and we're gone." She turned the gun back on Stefan who nodded.
"Yeah. Okay. You're right. My dead brother is not your problem." Stefan looked at Hayley and Tanya's boyfriend and then he looked at Tanya. "It's mine." Speeding forward, he grabbed Tanya's wrist, snapping it backward and Hayley heard the crack as the bone snapped and then he threw her into the wall to their left. Her head smashed into the concrete and Stefan turned to Hayley. "What a waste of a good meal."
Tanya's boyfriend let out a howl of fury. Hayley knew that the people closest to the alleyway had to have heard that. It would take the cops awhile to show up to find Tanya. They might not even show up until tomorrow, when the party ended and the cleanup began.
"You son of a bitch," Tanya's boyfriend raged, struggling in Hayley's grip who kept him pinned to the wall.
Hayley took a long breath before she looked at Tanya's boyfriend. "You've heard of Klaus Mikaelson, right? Well, Stefan's one of Klaus' friend, you hurt him, Klaus hurts you, and maybe your friends, or family, if you have any. So, you should probably leave. Find another human girl. Make sure she doesn't decide to play rough with the wrong kind of vamps." Dropping Tanya's boyfriend to his feet, she turned to Stefan. "Let's go."
Hayley only got to the opening of the alleyway when she realized that Stefan was not with her. Whirling on her heel, she was about to lay into him when she let out a cry. Stefan had ahold of Tanya's boyfriend. They were on the ground, Tanya's boyfriend unable to scream as Stefan tore through his neck. "What are you doing?" Hayley shouted, moving to Stefan's side and trying to pull him off of the other vampire. Stefan pushed her away with one hand and she fell against a wall.
Finishing his work, Stefan stood up and spit. "Ugh. Vamp blood is not that great when they're having sex," he said, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. He glanced at Hayley and then moved to help her up.
Glaring back at him, Hayley pushed herself to her feet. "There are rules, Stefan. We don't kill our own kind here." She watched Stefan roll his eyes and then his gaze froze on something behind her. His eyes widened and he grimaced. She looked over her shoulder to find no one there. "What's going on?"
"Nothing. Let's get out of here," Stefan ground out. He reached out and grabbed Hayley's hand. Together they left the alley and the dead couple.
They did not get far before Stefan knocked a human onto the ground. "Hey, man!" the human cried as his friends helped him to his feet. "What's your problem?" the human demanded, moving into Stefan's face.
Hayley pushed her way between them. "My boyfriend's had too many," she told them. "Sorry. I'm getting him home."
"You do that," one the humans friends snapped at her.
Stefan let out a growl. "Shut up!" he shouted.
"What?" the human's other friend snapped.
"Leave me alone!" Stefan shouted, his eyes on someone in the crowd. "I don't care! Just leave me alone."
"Dude's on something," the human Stefan had knocked down told his friends. "Or he's nuts." He and his friends hurried away from Stefan and Hayley.
Hayley watched them go before she turned to find Stefan was missing, too. "Shit," she hissed before she began to push her way through the throng of people. This could not go well for either of them. And if Stefan caused too many problems Elijah might kill him. "Stefan!" she shouted, hoping he'd get over his little crisis and rejoin her. "Stefan!" she continued to shout, sniffing the crowd and smelling a lot of human sweat and alcohol. She felt so damned hungry. Right now she would love to get a meal and go find a bed to crash in for the night but Stefan seemed to have other plans.
Giving up, Hayley headed down another alley and scaled the fire escape to be able to watch from the rooftop. Maybe he'd gone to Rousseau's. Probably not the best place for him to be at in his current mood. Or maybe Caroline and Elijah came looking for them. Knowing Caroline, Klaus healed her and she came out to look for her friend. And Klaus would not have allowed her to go out on her own.
Shaking her head, Hayley began to jump from rooftop to rooftop. She stopped when she heard the sound of a familiar pair of witches, in the middle of a heated argument.
"Vincent, we may need you one day. You cannot walk away from what you are," Freya Mikaelson intoned.
Vincent Griffith shook his head back and forth, and he pressed his palms together, his eyes on the ground. "Freya, you are listening to what I am telling you. I am done. You got me. I helped Davina to become the regent. And that was it. I am out of the business. Got my own life now. Far from all of this!" He raised his hands, indicating the city streets. "Now you all can go at each all you want. Good night."
"Vincent!" Freya cried out, grabbing Vincent's arm. "With the wolves who are drawing strength from Klaus and my family divided, I need your help. I am asking you, nicely. Please?"
"I have my own friends to help. My own life," Vincent replied.
"Not for long," Stefan's voice broke in and Vincent let out a howl of pain when Stefan grabbed him and sunk his fangs into his neck.
Freya's eyes widened before she raised her hands and began to chant. Stefan let out a scream, letting go of Vincent and stumbled backward. "Ahhhh!" Stefan screamed, blood beginning to seep from his ears and eyes and he fell on his back.
Dropping from the rooftop, Hayley stepped between Freya and Stefan. "Nice to see your back, Freya. Klaus and Elijah missed you."
Freya's hand dropped as Vincent moved to stand up, his hand clutched the side of his neck and he looked equal parts disgusted and pissed off. Hayley did not believe that Freya would hurt her, much, but Vincent might. Maybe. She still wasn't sure whether they would be friends or allies in the years to come.
"How was Rebekah?" Hayley inquired.
"Good," Freya replied, but her eyes were on Stefan. "I take it you found a new friend to help you through your grieving process?" Cocking her head to the side, Freya offered Stefan a dangerous smile. "And he has yet to learn who he can and cannot stick his fangs into."
"Shut up!" Stefan shouted and Hayley involuntarily jumped at the volume of his anger.
Freya frowned. "I sense he is in pain, too."
Vincent jumped in. "I don't care what is going on with him. He bites me again, I end him." He nodded at Hayley. "I am done with the Mikaelsons and all of your friends." Waving his hands at them, Vincent turned and strode away from them.
"Just leave me alone," Stefan cried out and Hayley turned to find Stefan shoving someone she could not see away from him. He started to try to walk away when Freya snapped her fingers and he dropped to the ground.
"We should get him back to the compound," Freya told Hayley, moving to stand beside Stefan.
Hayley paused. "Little problem with that."
"Yes?" Freya's eyebrows rose.
"He might have stabbed a girl that Klaus is into," Hayley shrugged. "Elijah told us not to come back till the morning."
"Then we will take him to the bell tower till then," Freya said before she and Hayley began the process of moving Stefan out of the street which was, thankfully, deserted.
"Thanks for not killing him," Hayley said, looking at Freya.
Freya looked at Hayley with a serious expression. "If he had killed Vincent, I would have ended him, friend of Klaus' or not." Without another word they continued the journey to the bell tower. Hayley really hoped that Stefan would not do anything else stupid that would end with Freya killing him because she kind of liked having him around. The sudden, all-too-human sentiment annoyed her and Hayley forced herself to ignore it, for now.

Hello, my lovely readers. There's a whole lot of drama in this chapter. On with the show…
Chapter 8: Party of Eight?
Tensions still ran high hours after Caroline's arrival. Hayley and Stefan disappeared to Hayley's room. They could hear Klaus talking Caroline into staying a little longer. Elijah was heard in the hallway but he did not attempt to talk to Hayley or Stefan. Josh's and Davina's voices were heard in the hallway followed by Klaus' shout of pain and a series of curses, a muffled argument and then Elijah's loud sigh.
All the Ripper wanted to do was to find Caroline and mount her head on the nearest wall. Her presence would do nothing but ruin all of his plans. He was enjoying himself. He had Hayley and a new life. Who in the hell did Caroline think she was butting into his life?
Hayley sat on the edge of her bed, her body stiff and Stefan wanted her to calm down. "Why is she here?" Hayley growled, her eyes moving around the room.
Stefan paced the length of her room, thinking about what they could do to get rid of Caroline before she tried to make him flip his switch. "We'll just have to kill her." He felt certain of his plan but Hayley looked less so, her eyes searching the rug for answers.
Rolling her eyes, Hayley shook her head. "Stefan, he's not going to allow you to hurt her."
Stefan smirked at Hayley. "Whoever said I would be doing the killing?" He felt amused at Hayley's sudden case of short-sighted vision.
Hayley's eyebrows rose. "And who do you plan on letting kill her?"
"One of Klaus' enemies. Like the Guerra woman, or Marcel Gerard, someone like that. Someone who wants to hurt Klaus." Stefan came to sit beside her. "Look, Hayley, Caroline is just a girl from a tiny town. She has no idea what kind of horror show she walked into when she came down here. It's likely she'll be killed by a day walker tomorrow. If not, I can help speed up the process." The possibilities seemed endless to Stefan.
Hayley frowned as Stefan kissed her on the lips. "Stefan, I don't like this."
Stefan stood up and offered her his hand. "Come on. You're just getting cranky because you haven't fed. Let's go find a tourist to pair with a nice red wine."
Getting to her feet, Hayley took Stefan's arm. They left her room and went downstairs. "Where do you think you're going?" Klaus snapped as they moved to leave the compound.
Turning around, Stefan looked at Klaus who smirked back at him. "We're going out for dinner, would you like to join us?" Stefan inquired lightly. Klaus' eyes narrowed as Stefan offered him a fake apologetic look. "Sorry, man, I forgot, you're grounded. Must really suck being drained of all of that nasty Original Hybrid energy." Smirking, Stefan held up a hand and waved good-bye. "We'll bring you back a nice kid from the mid-West. And don't worry—I'll sever their spine so it'll make it easier on you—in case they try to run away. I know you can't really deal with fast food anymore."
"Stefan!" a high-pitched voice cried and Stefan rolled his eyes, turning to find Caroline come down the stairs. She wore a dress that Klaus must have given her. She looked nice and Stefan wished she were still human, he'd love to sink his teeth into her pale flesh and listen to her death cries.
"Where are you going?" Caroline cried out, her eyes widening and her mouth setting into a firm line as she glared at Hayley.
Sighing, Stefan sped in front of Caroline and grabbed her by the shoulders. "I'm going out; you're not invited. Have a nice night. Try to keep your pants on. Or don't. Maybe Klaus will make you loosen up. Hell, Klaus," Stefan wrapped an arm around Caroline's shoulder and turned to Klaus who glowered at him, "do us all a favor and make her flip her switch. I dare you!" Shoving Caroline in Klaus' direction, Stefan grinned at Klaus.
Caroline stepped away from Klaus. "Please, don't!" she cried when Klaus sped in front of her.
"Caroline," Klaus began when Stefan rolled his eyes.
"You're chickening out, aren't you?" Stefan shouted at Klaus. Klaus' eyes flicked to Stefan who chuckled. "Man, you have changed. You're whipped now!" Laughing, Stefan sped to Hayley's side and moved to leave when another vampire sped in front of them. "Elijah, come to give us your two cents?" Stefan inquired.
Elijah did not bother to look at Stefan. "We're having dinner, Hayley. And I would like it if you'd join us." He held out a hand, and Stefan's eyes moved to the table set up for eight people to dine at.
"Great. A dinner party," Stefan sighed. "Tell me we get to kill someone."
"Not tonight," Elijah replied, his eyes moving from Hayley to Stefan. "Of course, that might change over the course of the meal."
"Elijah!" Hayley snapped, folding her arms over her chest.
"Please, let's sit," Elijah waved to the table again and Stefan looked to Hayley. She gave Elijah a look that might burn through a steel wall before she stomped over to the table and sat down.
"Caroline," Klaus said, offering his arm.
Caroline huffed and went to sit down. She sat as far from Hayley as she could get. Stefan sat down next to Hayley, wrapping an arm around the back of her chair. Caroline's eyebrows knit together as she looked at them. Klaus took a seat at the head of the table, at the end that Caroline had sat at. The baby vampire groaned and stared at the seat next to Stefan.
Josh and Davina came downstairs. "Hey, everyone!" Josh greeted them with a friendly smile.
Davina glared at everyone assembled. "You're going to serve human food, not humans?" she demanded, her eyes boring a hole into Klaus' head.
Klaus smirked up at her. "If you insist."
Scoffing, Davina looked at Hayley and Stefan before taking a seat in the seat on the opposite end from Klaus so she would be closet to Hayley. Josh took the empty seat next to Caroline which forced Elijah to sit next to Stefan. Yeah. This would be a fun night.
"What brings you to town, Caroline?" Elijah asked Caroline as wine was served.
"Ah!" Klaus called when the woman who had been serving them started to give Davina a glass of wine. "She's a child. Please, serve her a glass of orange juice. It's fresh-squeezed."
Davina rolled her eyes. "And now I have to do this sober."
Grinning, Stefan picked up his glass of wine. "To everyone at this little party; may we all survive in this city." Lifting his glass, Stefan allowed his eyes to linger on Caroline who shifted in her seat uncomfortably.
"To old friends," Klaus said, lifting his own glass.
"Are there any friends here?" Davina looked at them, her gaze skeptical. "Other than Josh and me?"
"Yes," Klaus replied. "The Ripper and I used to be old pals. Weren't we, Ripper?"
Rolling her eyes, Caroline turned to Klaus. "Are you talking about the time that you compelled him to be your murder buddy or the time that you compelled him to forget about being in love with Rebekah?" she snapped.
Hayley looked at Stefan. "You and Rebekah were a thing?"
Klaus let out a chuckle. "I see that someone has not been entirely forthcoming."
"And you're just full of honesty, Klaus?" Stefan placed his elbows on the table and leaned forward to look at Klaus. "Tell me, Klaus, what's it like knowing that you kept how many secrets from the woman that you're in love with?"
Narrowing his eyes at Stefan, Klaus avoided Caroline's gaze. "Stefan, I have no idea what you're getting at, mate."
"Like the kid that you and Hayley had? That ring a bell for you?" Stefan inquired, picking up a knife and pointing it at Klaus.
Elijah took the knife from Stefan and laid it on the other side of him. "What year is this, Niklaus?" He held up his wine glass.
"1922," Klaus snapped, leaning closer to Stefan so that Elijah had to sit back. "I shared my secret with Caroline."
"Oh, really?" Stefan looked at Caroline who blushed. "When was that?" Stefan inquired.
Caroline picked up her glass of wine and took a long sip. Klaus looked at her. "I believe you already know the answer to that, otherwise you would not be asking me."
Hayley looked from Klaus to Caroline. "You screwed him?" she asked Caroline, laughing in shock.
Caroline glared at Hayley. "So did you," she snapped darkly. "Either that or you kept him here for no reason, at all."
"Excuse me?" Hayley snapped.
"Here is the first course," Elijah called out. No one seemed to be listening.
"Me?" Hayley continued to stare at Caroline who sat with her arms crossed. "You think that kept Klaus here? Why would you care?"
Now, Caroline's eyes drifted to her plate. "I don't care. Wow! This looks really delicious. Elijah, you're going to have to give me the recipe."
Klaus leaned closer to Caroline. "Did you want me to stay, love?"
Caroline choked on her food. "No!" she snapped.
"Liar!" Stefan said, holding his fork and pointing it at her. Elijah took Stefan's fork. "Hey, what do you want me to eat with?" Stefan demanded, glaring at Elijah.
"Your hands," Elijah snapped at him.
"This is great. It's like a reality TV show," Josh whispered to Davina.
Blushing, Caroline finished her wine. "Can I get another glass?" The woman who served them poured Caroline a second glass.
"I did not keep Klaus here. A bunch of witches made her stay until the baby was born. Klaus could come and go wherever the hell he wanted to," Hayley told Caroline. "So if he told you that he had to stay; he lied."
Klaus banged on the table with his fist. "I never told her anything of the sort!"
"Wouldn't be the first time," Hayley snorted, picking up her glass of wine and taking a sip.
Rolling his eyes, Klaus turned to Caroline. "Tell us, Caroline, is Stefan the only reason you came to our town?"
All eyes moved to Caroline whose eyes widened. "Umm… Yes. I got a lead. From a witch. Since my best friend, Bonnie, you might remember her, you used to make her life a living hell, well, she's dead –"
"We all know that," Stefan interrupted her with a long sigh. "Speed it up to the important part, like where this is all about you, as usual."
"What?" Caroline's mouth dropped open. "Stefan, that is so not true!"
"I am sorry about Bonnie's passing." Klaus placed a hand over Caroline's hand.
Caroline jerked her hand away from Klaus. "Don't touch me."
"But it's okay for him to touch you when you're all alone and you think no one will know and judge you?" Stefan questioned Caroline, picking up Hayley's fork and pointing it at his former best friend.
Again, Caroline just stared at him. "You flipped your switch. Is it because of Da—" The last word lodged in her throat when Stefan jumped over the table and stabbed her in the neck. Caroline's eyes widened and she began to choke on her own blood.
"Ripper!" Klaus thundered and then Stefan was on his back. He kicked Klaus who went sailing across the courtyard. Within seconds, both Klaus and Stefan were on their feet, fangs out, ready to fight to the death.
"Stop this! Now!" Elijah warned them, stepping between them. "Niklaus, attend to Miss Forbes'. Hayley, take Stefan and do not return until tomorrow."
"Thank God!" Stefan cried, grabbing Hayley's hand and speeding out of the compound.
