When he first sees HIM, he’s a foreboding presence that stands behind his brother, arms crossed and eyes the most DANGEROUS shade of blue he’s ever seen. They stare through him, JUDGING the deputy’s ever movement. It takes some semblance of self-control to keep his hands steady as he CLAMPS the handcuffs over Joseph’s wrists. After the helicopter crashes, Alder swears he could SEE the man following him as he tears through the brush to escape the cultists.
A walking NIGHTMARE.
Blood in his eyes from the wound he had received in the crash, Alder jumps from the short cliff and lands in an even smaller lake, using it as a means of escaping into the night. A logging building comes up in front of him and he slides into the brush, FORCING his stuttering heart to stop and calm down. He could hear them. Could still HEAR HIM stalking through the paths like the hunter he surely is.
Hidden. Out of sight. Alder wonders if he’d get out of here ALIVE.

listen fellas I’m a simple blogger. I log onto tumblr dot com, I start a text post, I call out Jacob Seed’s maladaptive coping mechanisms.

“Alder!”
“Come with me. Save yourself, you don’t owe these people any more. You’ve given them everything.”
Dark Knight Starters || accepting
It’s like he knew just what to say.
At first, he’d gone on the ALERT immediately when Jacob had come to HIM rather than the other way around. A revolver was his reward, finger on the trigger yet NOT QUITE firing. The Herald had been so SURE that the rookie deputy wasn’t going to pull the trigger and Alder wanted to PROVE HIM WRONG.
But he was tired.
Alder was tired and SICK of all the fighting. He didn’t want to go through with ANY of this anymore. This place, this CURSED COUNTY was taking whatever morals he had left and was CRUSHING IT beneath the sole of its boot. Without remorse but with MORE than enough cause. Alder’s hands are shaking before he even REALIZES they are. His aim is wavering so harshly and so suddenly. His vision is BLURRING and the deputy ANGRILY wipes his eyes free from tears.
You don’t owe these people any more.
He knows, GOD Alder knows that. Scarcely any of them ever bothered to actually help him. They told him what was happening. They put a gun in his hand and told him to MARCH. Was it really even HIS WANT to save the county from its impending collapse? These people would eventually SLAUGHTER each other if he were to back out now. More people would end up dead from both sides. He was the turning point. He was the Resistance’s WEAPON against the cult. He KNEW THIS. But he always kept fighting. What was it FOR anymore? Joey? Staci? Earl? Did they even KNOW he was still ALIVE?
Come with me.
His hands lower; Alder feels like he’s shaking too hard as the EMOTIONS swell and settle uncomfortably in his chest. It’s too sudden and heavy and he just about COLLAPSES underneath the weight of it all. Alder catches Jacob’s cautious step forward, as if approaching a TERRIFIED CORNERED ANIMAL. He doesn’t react. He can’t make himself.
SAVE YOURSELF.
And a SOB is choked out; the revolver falls into the grass from limp fingers. Large hands settle on his shoulders, steadying the deputy on his shaking legs.
He felt so WEAK.

“Yes, sir.”
There’s a cloudiness in his eyes as he directs his attention towards Jacob, unafraid of making pointed eye contact. His orders are his orders, and he has no say in the matter unless he wants to end up like the poor saps in the cages.
But that doesn’t mean he likes it. His loyalty simply knows no bounds, unwilling to let him disappoint the man that took him in.
“Thank you, sir.” a typical response from Leo, just so Jacob knows he’s grateful for his opportunity to be here and to be safe.
Some of the others around here don’t seem to share the sentiment. Fools.
