Can we stop claiming that Orin is complex? I don’t know where we got this misconception from, but he really isn’t. No, people are not “afraid to write complex characters” in fanfic when they make him evil. He is literally just “sadistic dentist” that is all he is. His whole character is genuinely just “I like causing people pain.” There is no layering. I am saying this as someone who has liked Orin for 13 years.
He has no secret tragedy.
He has no complex backstory.
He has no layers.
You can like him because he is evil, you are allowed to do that. If you can only like him after giving him some bullshit “complexity”, then maybe you just don’t like him. You ever thought of that?
If you are getting annoyed at people for portraying Orin as nothing more than a “kind of funny, mostly evil, sadist” then you are getting mad at the cannon portrayal.
Me personally? I think people should do what they want with him. He is a goddamn fictional character! Who cares!? You water him down/make him sweet? That’s your call! You give him a complex story and more meat to his character bones? You do that! You like him as a two dimensional sadist? Good for you!
But, for the love of god, stop whinging and moaning about “inaccurate portrayals” because people don’t adhere to your “secretly traumatised, super duper complex!” Orin headcannon. He isn’t nuanced. There is not a single part of the musical that actually gives him character outside of being Audrey’s abuser because he is a fucking plot device.
You are allowed to give him more character, just as others are allowed to ignore that.
