Do you have any advice on stopping head banging/hitting, both for the person who does it and what i could do to help as an outsider? My partner does this when he gets overwhelmed and angry with himself and it breaks my heart to see him hurt himself and id like to give support. He is not diagnosed as autistic but i know this is a common autistic behavior so i hope asking you isn't inappropriate (if so i apologize) but a quick google search only was giving me ableist and condescending results

Hello. I used to do this often and sometimes I still do this. Ihmod can add on if you wish.

I know when I did it my friend would put something soft between me and the hard surface. Like their hand or a pillow. Make sure this is okay with your partner. Besides that the best you can do is try and reduce stress by being a support for them and listening
