When Running Became My Way Through the Darkness
When my first husband died suddenly, everything in my world fell apart. The shock, the trauma, and the weeks that followed left my mind and body in constant distress. Sleep became almost impossible. I would wake while it was still dark — heart racing, thoughts tangled, unsure how to carry the weight of what had happened.
One very cold, frosty morning, when the sky was still ink-black, I left the house just to get some air. I didn’t plan anything. I didn’t even think. I simply stepped outside, started walking down the quiet road, and before I realised it… I was running.
That moment became a pattern for the next year.
I made a running playlist, grabbed my trainers in the early hours, and headed out into the stillness. I ran a lot — sometimes slowly, sometimes just enough to feel my feet hit the ground. My mind focused only on the next kilometre and the music in my ears. For those minutes, the noise in my head softened. I wasn’t reliving the trauma. I wasn’t thinking about the future. I was simply… moving.
As the months passed, something else shifted. I started noticing the countryside around me — the fields, the frost, the birds stirring as the light returned. My body grew stronger. My breath felt steadier. And quietly, gently, my mind began accepting the possibility of healing and the life ahead of me.
I hardly run now. I don’t need it in the same way. But for that time in my life, running was essential. It became my doorway into mindfulness — into focusing on one moment, one breath, one step at a time.
It taught me that healing can begin in the smallest of movements, even in the coldest and darkest of mornings. And it reminded me that sometimes survival starts with simply putting one foot in front of the other, trusting that light will meet you on the way.
Half page spread in the @ahmedabadmirrorofficial running up to the 41st Vikram Sarabhai International Arts Festival @nataraniamphitheatre 2019 is definitely going out with a bang. The highlights are endless. Many thoughts about this opportunity, how it's come to be and what seeds I'm planting by being here and soaking up this incredibly welcoming space. Thank you to the people who donated again. You help make this possible. Give thanks and have happy holidays. #artisactivism #healinginmotion #beleiveandacheive #talentandhardwork #international https://www.instagram.com/p/B6h_nHMH5F5/?igshid=fgkuj5re4d4k
