Do you guys know what its called when you can hear colors? It feel like it isn't normal. I'm too afraid to ask my therapist because if I tell her I might get diagnosed with something bew and I'm afraid to Google it because the internet can lie. I was hoping that someone here mught know and tell me some of the symptoms? Thank you so much. (Tag as colors)
You’re most definitely not alone in experiencing this! There is a name for something similar to what you’re experiencing, namely synesthesia (or synaesthesia). ‘Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which information meant to stimulate one of your senses stimulates several of your senses.’ (source) Since we’re not professionals, we can’t say whether you for sure are dealing with synesthia. We also recommend you not to self-diagnose for the reasons listed here.
There are a lot of different forms of synesthesia. Someone might taste shapes, hear colours, have colours associated with letters or numbers or days of the week, etc. Since people experiencing synesthesia experience sensory perceptions in a different way, this can sometimes cause difficulty when trying to express your perceptions to someone. For example, you might say ‘it’s a really green day’ and to you that makes a lot of sense, but those around you have no idea what you mean by it.
I do think it would be good to talk about this with your therapist. It’s not so much a mental illness that you can be diagnosed with, nor is there a treatment for it. But I think it’s good to open up to your therapist because then they know everything about what you’re dealing with. Often, people who experience synesthesia feel like it is a positive thing. However, it can be overwhelming at times as well. Or you might feel more easily overwhelmed by, for example, social interactions, because on top of the interaction, you’re also hearing the colours. And since being overwhelmed is something you might be discussing with your therapist, it’s good for them to know.
If this is something you’d like to talk about with people who experience similar symptoms, you might want to search for a forum online, or see if there are other online communities that you could join. But know that you aren’t alone in this!
