Can we just take a minute and acknowledge what an incredible friend @heartonthefloor is? She is here for this community so consistently, pre-pandemic and now even more, even when she is losing it herself. She was meant to be here at this time to help all of us as she helps herself. You are a gift, Myndi.

"What type of friend are you?"

Not good. Neglectful, selfish, dumb as a rock. Easily forgotten and left. Lazy. Friendship has never been my forte. Just never have gotten the hang of it. And the older I get the less inclined I am to try to remedy this.

What made you smile this week?

Wearing a sleeveless top without second-guessing and questioning whether it was flattering on my body. 

My amazing librarian commenting on a post I made on FB about books I wanted to buy to say she’d buy them for the school library - I share so many diverse books and I’m really glad it’s starting to leak into books my awesome librarian is willing to buy for our library so everyone can have access. 

Seeing so many people posting and talking about Juneteenth - which I will admit I didn’t know much about until last year.

Getting a mani and pedi and feeling safe and comfortable with the sanitizing and social distancing practices my favorite nail salon is following. 

Getting flowers from my neighbors on Monday.

Meeting my other neighbor yesterday. 

Getting complimented on being able to find the studs in my wall - and the tech I hired to mount the TV saying that was the hardest part and if I could do that, I could have mounted the TV

Setting up my washer/dryer and fixing the leaking hose all on my own. 

Talk to two of the members of the K team about things that weren’t school-related. I’m determined to cultivate actual friendships with them this year because I think we have a lot in common.

What music comforts you? Pumps you up? Makes you feel heartbroken? Makes you feel young again?

This is a great question. Thank you.

Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of “outlaw” country. I’ve got a playlist when I drive for Lyft and have gotten a lot of compliments about it.

Late 90’s-Early 2000’s Nu-Metal and wrestling theme songs really get my blood pumping and gets me motivated for the gym. I catch myself sometimes strutting like the character who’s song I’m listening to sometimes with the wrestling themes.

As far as music that makes me feel heartbroken, a lot of the older country songs about loss, especially loss caused by poor choices can be pretty hard to listen to at times but also therapeutic. Also, songs that remind me of certain people. You know when you hear that song that was “your song” before you fucked it all up.

Now the music that makes me feel young again is really anything from my childhood, a lot of “guilty pleasure” stuff. 80’s pop, Weird Al, TV Theme songs. Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, NKOTB all bring me back to a younger, more innocent time.

Favorite Restaurants

My favorite restaurant in Richmond is a restaurant that serves French cuisine, called L’Opossum. I love the food and the atmosphere. I just dig the whole vibe here.

Other spots I love in RVA are Secret Sandwich Society, Lunch.Supper, and Nicholas and I love to eat at Galaxy Diner. I also like to eat at a Vietnamese place called Mekong quite often. They have an excellent beer menu, and really good food.

My favorite Mexican restaurant is called Javier’s, and it’s in Dallas.

2019 Reflection Questions

1. Highlight of your year

Definitely my 30th birthday trip to Cincinnati. That was a lot of fun and we got to do some cool and new things. And eat some good food. Which is always important if I’m involved.

3. Did you achieve the goals you made for yourself in 2019?

I didn’t really make any goals for myself this year besides reading five books. I have made a reading goal for the past couple of years on GoodReads and I’ve never met it. This year I’m at 4/5. I’m so close to meeting it. I may not but I should be proud of the fact that I’ve even come this close coz normally I’m at 0/5.

4. What are you most proud of this year?

Uhhh, I dunno. I don’t feel like I’ve done much. I guess the fact that I read a few books, but it feels overshadowed by the fact that I used to read like...five books a month before I got sick. So it’s hard to be proud of that.

I’m still here. That’s something. Still making it through the BS. Haven’t given up yet.

I made it through my brain MRI. That’s also something. That was pretty big and scary. It’s hard to find things you’re proud of when you’re still comparing to everyone else’s scale.

5. Who supported you in 2019

My parents, my counselor, my cats, and my friends. I’ve made a couple new friends this year so that’s been helpful.
