‘Joker’ Wins Two Oscars

And after all of the speculation and talk, Joker took home two Oscar Awards last night; one for best actor and one for best score.

The Best Actor Award win for Joaquin Phoenix isn’t a huge surprise after his multiple awards for the film including his (Phoenix) best actor award at the Venice Film Festival in August, where the movie debuted.  Hildur Guonadottir also took home the Oscar for best original score.

Joker went into the awards being the most decorated comic book movie of all time by leading the Oscars with eleven nominations including:

Best Actor, Best Original Score, Best Picture, Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, Director, Costume Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling.

The two Oscar wins adds to the two Golden Globes, two BAFTA and SAG awards won by both Phoenix and Guonadottir.

Joker is not the first comic book adapted film to be nominated or even win an Oscar.  in 2009, Heath Ledger won the Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight.

Joker performed way past expectations earning more than $1 billion dollars at the box office making Joker the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time and did all of it without money from China.

In his acceptance speech, Phoenix used his voice to raise awareness surrounding various social and political situations:

“We fear the idea of personal change because we think we have to sacrifice to give something up.  Human beings are so inventive and creative…when we use love and compassion as our guiding principles…we can create systems of change for the environment.”

No matter what, Joker is the most influential and decorated comic book movie of all time and the Oscar wins by Joaquin Phoenix just cements that fact.

It turns out that Arthur Fleck’s “one bad day” turned into some amazing months for Warner Bros, Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix, DC and everyone involved; especially the fans.

The Jared Leto figure of The Joker was sold by Funko. But I don’t think any of the Heath Ledger Joker were ever made. I defineky would have bought one.
