I finally completed this Monkshood drawing, exactly a year to the day I started it. Better late than never, right? ☠️ Monkshood’s power has been feared and revered since antiquity and it is known as the “Queen of Poisons,” as it is one of the deadliest plants on earth. It is a classic herb of the witch and sacred to Hecate, who grew it in her poison garden located in the pre-Hellenistic kingdom of Colchis. Monkshood’s deep blue-violet color and hood-like shape have garnered it associations with the Virgin Mary as well as Venus. I know you’ve all been waiting to see this piece completed and here it is— Hecate’s Garden! Seen here as Hecate Chthonia, she resides over the poisonous plants of the underworld. She rests on a crescent moon as a symbol of her reign over the dominion of night. She holds aloft two torches in reference to her aid of Persephone and her illumination of crossroads, thresholds, and areas of transition. Hecate’s association with poisonous plants stems from her legendary herb garden on the island of Colchis, in which she grew poisonous plants in addition to other medicinal herbs. Hecate’s Garden journals, screen printed and bound by hand, are currently available in both ‘bone’ and ‘besom’ in the shop! The cover paper is handmade (not by me) in Jaipur and possesses the dreamiest raw edges. This rawness attests to its composition from recycled fibers, giving each piece its own unique inclusions, texture, and edges. It was love at first sight when I saw this paper, and I’m sure most of you can guess why— It reminds me of spellbooks and specifically Winifred’s “BoooOOOooook” in Hocus Pocus! I use mine as a grimoire, however it makes a great sketchbook and journal, too. This means that I will have to hunt down a new fabric which will most likely take some time. It took me over a year to find the fabric I’m using now, so I am incredibly sad it is being discontinued. This setback means that once my current patches are sold out, it will be a while before I am able to print them again, and when I do, they will be on different fabric.
