14: what’s your favourite AU setting?

This is kind of hard to answer, but I think the best way I can put it is that - I like au settings where the setting is still secondary to the characters in the story? I think I’m less put off by any actual setting and more put off by a story where it feels like the star of the show is supposed to be ‘look at when/where this is set’ - which, I’ll say with confidence, happens more regularly in historical period set fics or fantasy/scifi set fics. So by that line of reasoning, my favorite AU settings are ones that are similar to the real world with only small shifts, because the settings themselves are just less distracting and less likely to pull focus. So I end up leaning towards things like coffee shop aus or high school/university aus or aus in which the world is the same save for [insert one specific thing] that the story is built around.

(Also I feel like I need to disclaim this is pure personal preference. A lot of people read fic, or novels, or whatever, and what they really enjoy are richly built background worlds and that’s what they’re looking for in stories. And that’s totally fine, I am not trying to take anything away from people who write that or people who read it, it’s just a personal preference to be more character focused.)
