Lessons of Love and Why They're Dangerous
As a little girl, whenever Jinri heard someone talking about falling in love, it always sounded magical. Fairy tale-esque dreams filled the space of her sleep at night, though the scenes always varied: dancing at an elegant ball, being swept off her feet into a breath-taking kiss, sharing secret whispers in a beautiful garden, being surrounded by grandeur as she exchanged vows with a faceless, but handsome, prince. Everything she had ever heard about love built her up.
No one ever prepared her for the fall.
Falling never felt like falling around Heechul. He was sweeter than the sugar he poured into his coffee every morning he came into the shop where she worked. Perfect lips formed perfect compliments and she didn't even think twice the first time he asked her on a date.
Whenever someone talked about love around Jinri, it was always romance. Rose-colored glasses hindered her vision early on in life. Love was all kisses and flowers and hugs and hand-holding.
No one ever told her sex was a part of the equation.
The first time Heechul tried to slip a hand under her skirt, she jerked away, eyes wide and completely scandalized. He soothed her with gentle kisses and careful fingers as he whispered, "You trust me, right? You love me right?"
She did, so she let him pass the boundaries of her clothes and heart.
Love meant never having to say sorry. At least that's what Jinri heard as a child.
Yet, she found herself apologizing to Heechul a lot for what seemed like the smallest things: not answering his texts within two minutes, not being at his apartment when he got home, for talking to her male classmates, for having a lock on her phone. She convinced herself that it was okay, it was love, and he just worried about her.
No one ever mentioned the bad, only ever the good. Everyone made it sound like if she found someone she loved, she would find him on one knee one day.
No one ever warned her about the possibility of finding him in bed with another woman.
Everyone said that if she found someone she loved, they'd be together forever.
No one ever told her he'd scream at her to get out and never come back.
Everyone said that he'd make her feel like the only girl in the world.
No one warned her about the time she'd spend in front of the mirror, wondering what was wrong with her.
Everyone said that if she fell in love, she'd be so happy she couldn't fall asleep.
No one said she would cry herself to sleep.
Yes, everyone told Jinri what it was like to fall in love...
...but no one told her what it was like to have your heart broken.
