Vanitas wasn’t supposed to come in uninvited, but he often did anyway. Kairi would get huffy with him, but she never felt as upset as she tended to act. Apparently, she would get in trouble with her father if he knew a boy was sneaking into her room.

Well, it was a good thing that Vanitas was good at disappearing quickly. He quickly grew accustomed to the footfalls of the household. He could recognize when the footsteps outside were heavier and spread further apart. And if the door opened, he would simply vanish.

So when he emerges from the dark portal and sees that Kairi isn’t there, he simply walks around—pausing at the sight of a new pink shark among her collection. He tilts his head, then moves to look at the pictures hung up above her desk. Happy little snapshots of Kairi with other people—some of which he knew, and some which he didn’t.

He huffs quietly, his eyes falling down onto the desk.

Huh… what was this?

Vanitas reaches down to pick up the piece of paper that had been left out, turning it around as he began to read.
