Hello everyone!

Preparations for Kyoshi Era week 2026 are underway! In favor of giving everyone ample time to prepare their submissions Kyoshi Era Week 2026 will be hosted from August 24th through August 30th.

Let’s try to have some fun!

What works will be accepted? Everything, as long as it adheres to the rules. This means one-shots, multi-chapter fics, drabbles, artwork, video shorts, headcanons, meta-analysis, cosplay, mood boards, music, etc!

Hi anon! You’re kind of correct, though not fully. Yun wasn’t exactly “unhealthily in love” with Kyoshi, though they did both have mutual crushes on each other. He was close friends with both Kyoshi and Rangi before… certain shit went down lol. The main thing about Yun’s character is that he was misidentified as the Avatar instead of Kyoshi, and Kyoshi worked as a maid at his Avatar mansion, while Rangi was his bodyguard.

However… if you want the more in-depth rundown of his character and what happens to him in the novels… I love infodumping about Avatar lore, so I’m gonna include that below lol.

SPOILERS for the Kyoshi novels below this point!

Yun was misidentified as the Earth Avatar following Kuruk after Earth Kingdom directional geomancers couldn’t find Kyoshi, as she traveled a lot as a child with her parents who were daofei (criminals). Yun was “identified” by Kuruk’s old companion and earthbending teacher Jianzhu as the next Avatar because of his Pai Sho playing style being extremely similar to Kuruk’s (fun fact: Yun was from Makapu, the town where The Fortuneteller episode takes place in ATLA).

By the time Yun was 16, he had been fully accepted by the world as the Avatar, and was actually very good at the diplomatic side of Avatarhood. A large private residence was built for him to live and train in just of the village of Yokoya, where Kyoshi was abandoned by her parents as a child (Yokoya would someday become part of Kyoshi Island). Kyoshi was eventually “adopted” by Kelsang, Kuruk’s friend and airbending teacher (he’s also in the fighting game) and given a job working as a maid at Yun’s Avatar mansion. Yun, Kyoshi, and Rangi, who was Yun’s bodyguard, were all the same age and became good friends, and Kyoshi and Yun developed crushes on each other.

Eventually, however, Kyoshi made up a poem on the spot that was the exact same wording as a private poem that Kuruk had once written, and Kelsang recognized it immediately. Jianzhu also soon found out that Yun was not the Avatar after taking both him and Kyoshi to a remote gorge and summoning a malevolent spirit, Father Glowworm, to taste both of their blood and identify the real Avatar. When Kyoshi was identified as the true Avatar, Jianzhu sacrificed Yun to Father Glowworm, and he was dragged into the Spirit World.

But Yun didn’t die - since he went into the Spirit World physically, he could use his earthbending, and because Father Glowworm had already been severely weakened by Kuruk years ago, he was able to fight and defeat the spirit. In the end, Father Glowworm was reduced to a single small eyeball - which Yun ate.

Consuming Father Glowworm made Yun part-spirit and gave him its powers. He eventually escaped the Spirit World and returned to the mortal realm in a ragged state, but when he begged some villagers in a teahouse for some water, they refused and demanded payment, some laughing at him. This made something snap in Yun, and he killed all of the villagers in the teahouse. From that point forward, he became an erratic and malevolent person, consumed with getting vengeance on everyone who lied to him about being the Avatar.

Yun killed Jianzhu with ease, and tried to kill Hei-Ran as well, though he never managed to do so. Eventually, Kyoshi and Rangi were forced to fight their old friend at the abandoned Avatar mansion. When Yun nearly killed Rangi, Kyoshi killed him by freezing his heart and lungs with waterbending.

Okay, end of infodumping lol.

All in all, Yun is an incredibly tragic character, and I have always had a certain fondness for him. He was a genuinely good-hearted and kind guy, but everything horrible that happened to him - particularly fighting and consuming Father Glowworm, which made him become less human - eventually corrupted him. I remember genuinely crying when I first read the part where the villagers refused to give him any water.

I was actually so glad to see him be put into the fighting game! All of the Kyoshi stuff that I’ve seen from the game so far has been super book-accurate, and I love that you can tell the devs have done their research and read the novels lol.

It just occurred to me, but if Kuruk had a thing for Hei-Ran, and then Kyoshi gets together with Rangi...is that weird? This seems a bit like Twilight with reincarnation thrown in.
