3. Drinking Hot Chocolate by the Fire

“I told you not to spend too much time out in the snow,” Shokrakar chuckled as he wrapped a warm blanket around Heidi’s shoulders, she sat in front of the roaring fireplace. She was shaking from the cold, her nose and cheeks with a light pink colour, she sniffled a little, which was followed by a squeaky sneeze. Shokrakar smiled softly and shook his head. “Don’t worry, we’ll have you warm in no time, little one.” If there was one thing Shokrakar knew well, it was how to keep warm after being out in the freezing cold for a long time.

Snow had fallen over Skyhold and Heidi had been out enjoying it with the others. Her and Cole had built a huge snowman, with some help from Bull to truly make it a large masterpiece that towered over everyone. Heidi, Sera, and Varric had a snowball fight, then she finished it off with a few snow angels. Shokrakar had told her not to be out there for too long or she could get sick, he was almost like a concerned father. Heidi found him worrying about her sweet, but in her moments of fun, she had forgotten just how cold it was.

Heidi wrapped the blanket around her a little tighter. “Thank you for making it warm for me.” She said softly to Shokrakar, he didn’t have to, and yet he did.

Shokrakar smiled at her, then proceeded to make them both a drink. He had borrowed some things from the kitchens, mugs, milk, a pan, and some cocoa from Bull. He had been warming the milk on the fire for a while to make the drinks nice and warm.

“Here.” He placed Heidi’s drink in front of her. “Bull swears by this drink apparently, hot chocolate...never had it myself but I'll try anything once.” Shokrakar got his own drink and sat himself down next to Heidi. The drink smelt incredible, sweet but also a little bitter. He pressed the mug to his lips and took a sip. He savoured the taste for a moment, he didn’t say anything but did take another sip.

“Thanks, Shok!” Heidi picked her mug up in both hands, it was warm, it made her fingers tingle. She watched Shokrakar and took a sip. She realised that Shokrakar hadn’t said anything because he was too busy enjoying it. The flavour was new to both of them, cocoa wasn’t a regular thing in Fereldan but Varric had got a supply for Bull and he apparently wanted to share it around. “It’s delicious!” Heidi chirped happily before taking another sip.

“Definitely warming me up.” Shokrakar hummed and placed his mug down onto the floor. “Make sure to drink it all, Pumpkin, the warmer we keep you, the less likely you are to get sick.”

Heidi looked up at Shokrakar. “Can I ask you something?”

“‘Course you can.”

“Thanks...why...why do you care for me so much? I-I’m not complaining but…” She looked into Shokrakar’s large silver eye, she could tell he was a bit taken back by the question.

“I...Cole sometimes does his little thing where he says what people are thinking and fairly early on before you and Varric did whatever it was you did to him to make him more human, he mentioned how hard all of this…” He gestured to the air. “Is on you...I just wanna make things a little easier, so even on your hard days, you know that you are more than just the Inquisitor, you’re a sweet girl who’s doing her best, and that someone cares.”

Heidi held her cup a little tighter. She didn’t know what to say, it was a shock that Cole had said those things, even though it was well meaning, and it was even more shocking that Shokrakar had listened and taken it to heart so much that he wanted to look after Heidi, even though he didn’t have to. Heidi smiled sweetly and took another sip of her drinks.

“You’re a good man, Shok.”

“Thanks...drink up, before it gets cold.”

Another one of this lovely round of commissions, @chillyrose enlisted me to write for her Heidi Lavellan and Cole! It was an additional lovely departure for me, since I rarely get the chance to write for Cole. I also got to learn about Heidi and took inspiration from their warmth toward each other. Thank you for commissioning me.

The crisp autumn was, day-by-day, turning to a winter’s chill. Though the bite of the air was changing, the Inquisitor would take every opportunity to soak in the season’s lingering brightness before it was gone for the year. Admittedly, in mountains such as the Frostbacks, one did not see much of a weather variation. But what little change she could see in the skies or on the horizon’s peaks, she could see tenfold in the goods and deliveries that arrived at Skyhold day after day. 

That particular morning there were four wagons, two covered and two stocked with barrels. Likely oil, but it was funny to think it was the incredibly critical resupply of ale or wine. The covered carts held more colorful bounties: plums, pears, and other autumnal harvests ready to be put to delicious use. Heidi descended the stone stairs, at which point several crates of apples caught her eye first. She meandered, hand behind her back and grasping her opposite elbow, while the men were busy unloading. 

“Good morning, Your Worship,” she heard from one. She smiled instinctively, but her eyes remained enamored with the apples. The way they shined, waxed and deep. Another greeting, another nod of someone’s head. She kindly acknowledged them all as casually as possible. Eventually she halted. People probably thought she was out and about for austerity. Maybe she was, in her own way.

Soon after she stopped, she found she was not alone in her management.

“Morning,” said a much more familiar voice. Careful, but not timid. 

“Oh,” she blinked herself out of her fancying, and turned to her left. Cole stood by as she expected. He, too, looked out at the abundant goods.

“Good morning, Cole,” she replied. Her smile was more comfortable, this time. “Have you come around to see what the traders have brought in?”

“Yes. Two are happy to be off the road. Too many bumbling fruits that roll and spill. They are glad to be rid of them for a time.”

A gentle laugh. “I can see that.” 

Where once Cole’s insights had seemed abruptly incisive, they were now more like facets of him she wanted to more of. Yes, he often spoke of everyone but himself, but that didn’t mean he had nothing to share. In fact his observations shone a window into him that was likely truer than most.

“You like the look of the apples,” he observed, once again snapping her out of her spinning thoughts.

“I do! Yeah,” she answered with a brief chuckle. “I love the colors, not just theirs, but all of them.” 

Rather than answer, Cole approached the cart. Once there he reached quietly into one of the half-open crates and pulled out an apple so deeply red it looked like it had been painted so. 

“Red,” he described it, “red is not a good color for so many reasons.” He spoke as he turned around, holding it cupped in his hands. 

“No, I guess not.”

“You still like it. You wish they did not take the good colors and turn them bad. It isn’t fair, now you dream of it with fear rather than fondness.”

Heidi’s smile fell. The dream he spoke of wasn’t one she had last night, or even the night before that. She never just had one bad dream and her nightmares never showed just one face. A few nights ago the theme was a dark, endless hallway in the depths of a fortress. Once it was faces of menacing warhounds. And, between them both, there was one of red.

“You remember,” he observed. 

She blinked and returned his look with a grin. She rubbed her arm, just above her bent elbow. “Do you ever have favorite things that get ruined? Like a mysterious story, but someone gives away the ending or spoils the magic. Or a meal that is so good, but then someone admits there are mushrooms in it, and you hate mushrooms?”

“I do not hate mushrooms, though.”

“Oh, er, fine. Carrots.”

“Carrots? How are carrots bad? And how could one not see them?”

“Fine, then, what do you not like?” She walked up to the wagon and stood beside him. Even she could hear the crossness in her voice. Her mind spun and her arms crossed. It was then she realized how foolish she had been in her metaphor. 

“Agh,” she sighed, “you likely do not need food at all. Forgive me, I shouldn’t have assumed.”

They were wordless, side-by-side for a while. Skyhold buzzed and hummed around them as if they were frozen, statues around whom everyone else lived. In this state Heidi felt anything but lifeless, however; in fact, she felt more attuned to the act of being alive. He always ensured thus. Being frustrated seemed like a futile endeavor. His presence brought her as much comfort as his words brought agitation. 

“Inquisitor?” 

With a steady breath her eyes fell on the damned apples again. They still looked beautiful. “I am sorry, Cole, I--”

“No need to be sorry.” He side-stepped closer to her but then held his arm out to the pile from which he took the apple. Restored on the top it looked like the King of all the rest. It did not shake, nor did the lot topple or stumble. Cole’s gentility ensured it. When his hand fell away, he joined them both behind his back. Heidi realized her piece meal grin had grown into a smile. 

“Red is a good color, Inquisitor,” he added. “Do not be afraid to love it. Love brings comfort where people feel as though the world could never favor them.”

Suddenly the air seemed even chillier than before, particularly against her cheeks and temples. She rolled her shoulder, her posture straightening up as the rush of spinning, splendid butterflies did what they do best in the pit of her stomach. Luckily for her though, if she never said anything, no one would know. He wouldn’t know. Oh, but wait. He could, and would. 

She pivoted on the heel of her boot so as to step away with new urgency. “Well, I--”

“There it is!” he interrupted, speaking nearly the same moment she did. Confused, Heidi stopped her retreat and faced him. He was looking at her pointedly, not directly in the eyes -- he rarely ever did that -- but just below. The bridge of her nose and cheeks.

“There is what?” she asked, letting out a light, brief chuckle. 

“The color,” he answered. “The red you call beautiful. It is on you, now. It is you.”

It is you. 

Nothing could prevent her from the degree to which the color he spoke of intensified in her complexion. She placed her hand against her left cheek to show practical modesty. With a shake of her head and kindly dismissive laugh, she backed away.

“Good day to you, Cole. Enjoy the rest of the...the colors,” she wished, noticing the twitch in his lip that could almost be a grin. She turned around to face her path back up the stairs. 

“Farewell, Inquisitor,” she heard behind her. For as much as she wished the encounter had gone better, or perhaps softer, she at least found more reason to be fond of the richness and sweetness of apple red. And with it, a paralleled love of the way shades it cast inside pristine blue eyes.

A Moment Respite

The Emerald Grave

Warmth wraps around him they are content, compliant and cuddly. The little nugs do not want to harm anyone and only desire to be themselves. It is envious Cole thinks as he sits under the tree. A dagger flashing with the speed and agility of someone unaware of his own natural grace. Slices of Apple, and slices of cheese, things he took from one of the Venatori they had killed here. They didn't need it anymore. The nugs though look upon him with love, and affection. They sense, the deepest self. The compassion within him. He is most himself when he is not dipping into the darkness to kill.

He is what Cole would have wanted to be.

Still his eyes linger on his friends, those who do not demand change. They look out for him. Kid on the lips of the dwarf with unreal friends inside his head, The Iron Bull with all his strength and hidden insecurities but those make him stronger still. Eyes travel from the companions to her. He can't hear her as well. She is bright like the sun, he has to squint to sense her yet, she tugs gently at the fade and it is apart of her it is like home. There are mixed feelings, and mixed thoughts from her. She looks and pretends she doesn't. It is curious to Cole, but he still hasn't found the words to address that, to explain or experience the emotions he both understands and is in awe of.

A nudge to his hand brings him from his thoughts, was he staring ? Did she see, notice or know ? He shakes his head and shares another piece of cheese with the little nugs, he doesn't eat but he enjoys the company.  Emberium seems to grow here in splashs of bright against the green, like she is bright against the green of the fade. He moves like a ghost, a shadow to where she is. There are no question, or words not at first, there is only the tall young man who is suddenly in her presence.  

A simple gift offered to her in earnest, the flower that reminds him of her in the moment. “Do you like it ?”

“Hey, Lavellan! Your ears look extra cute today!” an upperclassman catcalled from across the street. He was tall, and largely built as were the rest of his friends with him, all wearing their football jerseys. There’s a game that day and the varsity team was feeling extra confident, proudly wearing their uniform reading Ferelden High School above the blue flaming sword indicative of their mascot, a templar.

Heidi Lavellan kept her focus on the sidewalk as she walked on, head down, purple eyes trained on the damp ground as a light snow continues to fall. She knew the human boy wasn’t just being friendly and even if he had been really interested in her she didn’t trust any of the templars. They were bullies and always made her nervous and uncomfortable. She hoped ignoring them would make them leave her alone.

No luck. She tensed and pulled her purple scarf closer to her face as the Templar glanced both ways at the empty street before starting to cross over to her side. She tightened her grip on her book bag and her legs braced themselves to start running.

“Oi, Heidi! Wait up!” a familiar voice suddenly called out. The blonde elf relaxed visibly as her upperclassman friend came jogging up behind her. Kieran Tabris sipped on his drink from McDonalds and moved his headphones from his ears to around his neck. “Do you mind if I borrow last night’s math home-

He paused as he made eye contact with the boy crossing the street who had stopped walking, hesitating. Kieran’s ability to assess situations wasn’t always the greatest but he already had a strong dislike for humans as a whole. Ignoring her surprised sound, the dark-haired elf threw an arm around his petite friend. Holding direct eye contact with the football templar, he lightly pecked Heidi’s cheek with a kiss, causing her her face to redden visibly.

Heidi wasn’t his girlfriend but Kieran figured the humans would think twice about messing with her if they thought she was. He probably couldn’t take all four of them on at once but he sure wouldn’t go down without a nasty fight. And judging by their wary looks and the way the boy half-way across the street retreated to his friends, they had some idea who he was. There were certain benefits to being a delinquent who very often got into fistfights, and once the humans had turned a corner to their bus stop, Kieran let himself grin. His reputation preceded him and he liked it.

“Kieran, thank you!” Heidi smiled warmly, her face was still pink but she squeezed her friend’s arm gratefully. A slight twinge of color came to the Korean boy’s cheeks at her enthusiasm and he reached out to mess up her hair.

“D-don’t mention it,” he mumbled before taking another sip of his McDonald’s drink. “So. About that homework…”

Heidi Lavellan x Kieran Tabris (Jealousy)

“Kieran, are you tired? You really don’t have to carry me…” Heidi Lavellan fussed as the taller elf took another shaky step up the mountain. The steep climbs along the Storm coast were no joke. A light drizzle was turning into a steady rain and the young man grimaced as his long dark hair stuck to his face. He hated getting wet, among other things, including-

“A misstep, a sharp pain, ankle hurt- can’t let her know, can’t show weakness-

“Quiet Hat Boy!” Grey Warden Kieran Tabris snapped before the rogue could reveal any more. He was still uncomfortable around the weird, spirit kid but Heidi had quite firmly told him he had to be nice. She also forbid him from calling Cole “Ghost Boy”. All of it put him in a foul mood, but that didn’t stop him from lifting the Inquisitor bridal style into his arms when a sharp rock had cut through the bottom of her thin Dalish shoes.

“You’re not heavy at all, it’s fine,” Kieran grumbled as she adjusted her arms wrapped around his neck. He fought to ignore the warmth in his pale cheeks from having her face so close to his. He made the mistake of glancing at her as he continued to walk up. Violet eyes were gazing over his shoulder at her teammates following behind. They lingered on the blonde boy. Again.

“But if you want to walk then FINE!” the city elf snapped loudly, temper flaring. He set Heidi back on her feet. The mage looked startled but accepted her staff back from Dorian who had been carrying it. The Tevinter man gave her an amused, knowing smirk as he passed but she remained clueless.

Several similar instances later included: Kieran “accidentally” knocking over a pile of rocks Cole was stacking at camp after Heidi complimented it, Kieran “accidentally” throwing the flower crown Heidi made for Cole into the line of fire of one of Dorian’s spells, and Kieran angrily making a ridiculous hat out of branches for himself when he saw Heidi adjusting the one on Cole’s head.

Finally, back at Skyhold, Heidi was assisting with the removal of tangled branches from the Warden’s hair. She was quiet, being in a rather unhappy mood herself. The Iron Bull, realizing she was never going to figure it out, had helpfully pointed out on the way back that the elf boy needed to work on his jealousy issues. She couldn’t understand why Kieran would be acting like that, but it was certainly not nice of him.

“Why have you been so mean to Cole lately?” she asked, not angry but determined for an answer. She lowered her hands and moved in close to his face, pouting. The dark-haired elf tensed visibly. “Why have you been acting so jealous of him?”

“Because I want you to look at me like that!” he shouted, his face equal parts angry and pained. He rose to his feet, his face reddening. Kieran Tabris stormed off leaving a very surprised Heidi with pink in her cheeks.

Platonic Touch Prompts - Heidi Lavellan x Cassian Cousland

“Warden Mahariel is really strict, huh?” Heidi sighed sulkily. It was snowing lightly as the sun began to set. Warden Cassian Cousland was carrying her back to camp. Heidi Lavellan had hoped to play in the snow today but had forgotten her snow boots- kind of on purpose, since she’d hoped she wouldn’t have to wear them- back at Skyhold. The stern-faced Dalish Warden had refused to let her play outside and sent Cousland to carry her back when she’d found her in a snowball fight with Tabris and Brosca anyways.

“Isseya just doesn’t want you to get sick,” Cassian Cousland replied amiably, his breath visible in the cold. “Your cloth slip-ons are soaked now, you must be cold,”

“I’m ok,” Heidi insisted, smiling at the concern and burying her face in the fur hood of the human’s jacket. She hugged him tighter as he carried her on his back. “Thank you again for carrying me. You’re so sweet,”

“No problem at all,” Cassian answered, turning his head back to grin at her. “Always a pleasure to help out a lovely lady,”

They exchanged bright smiles while the Inquisition members at camp exchanged surprised gossip as they watched the two arrive. Further gasps and rumors ensued when the two next headed to the blonde elf’s tent.

“How would you like to pass the time till the others return?” Cassian asked as Heidi dried her cold feet. She suggested reading a book together and the Warden agreed with such warm enthusiasm the plan commenced as soon as they were comfortably seated. They sat on her laid out bedroll with their backs against Heidi’s wooden chest containing her belongings.

Warden Cousland slipped out of his coat and pulled a blanket around the two of them instead. Heidi leaned close against his arm and began to read aloud from the book. Later, when the other Wardens returned, Warden Mahariel-slightly alarmed by the flying rumors- rushed to Heidi’s tent and pulled back the flap. She couldn’t help but smile a little and shake her head a little at the sight. 

The Inquisitor had fallen asleep while reading- likely tuckered out by the big fights from that morning- and her head lay against Cousland’s shoulder. The scruffy-haired human had also dozed off, his head rested lightly on Heidi’s. Isseya readjusted the blanket around them, blowing out their lantern before she left.

((thanks for the ask! I think Heidi and Cassian would get along well in the sense they’re both ridiculously nice to the point where other people think they’re showing romantic interest but both of them are just very friendly beans. There will probably be rumors flying around Skyhold but at least Nora and Kieran won’t be upset since they both know Cassian is gay))
