Ive never had much trouble falling asleep but staying asleep was a whole other problem and I quickly learned that the only way to get sleepy again was to go for a walk or bike ride. To this day I’ll take my dogs for a short walk at two or three in the morning if that’s what it takes and luckily I’ve mostly lived in safe small towns where that was possible (how I suffered when I lived in a dangerous neighborhood in Leeds)
But that doesn’t mean crime is nonexistent. When I was a teen I woke up at five in the morning and decided to bike to the forest just outside Korsør that has a Buddhist monastery and go for a walk. The monastery is an old Danish building that was converted so it doesn’t look like what you’d expect a Buddhist monastery to look like but I digress. It’s pretty nonetheless.
Anyway, I was walking down a small, barely visible path when I suddenly met a big, chubby but muscular guy with long hair in a ponytail and a leather vest just standing around. He looked surprised to see me but smiled and said “Good morning”. I was just as surprised to see him but returned the greeting and continued. Shortly thereafter I saw another guy holding a phone to his ear who looked just as surprised and I heard him say something along the line of “Yeah I see her. We should get out of here” then turned to me and smiled “Good morning” and I greeted him too as he walked past me towards the other guy.
And then a whole ass police car came rolling down the path towards me. The officer stuck his head out the window and said “Good morning”
“Good morning”
“Have you seen some guys in the forest while you walked around?”
“Uh yeah, I saw two guys that way”
“Thank you. Have a nice walk”
And then they kept rolling down the path and it was around that time I realized I had probably walked in on either Hells Angels or Bandidos doing something shady in the forest when they thought no one would be around. I suddenly got very nervous about the fact that I ratted them out to the police and quickly got out of the forest and biked home as fast as I could. When I told my mom about it the next day she thought I was making it up.
Don’t be too scared for past me tho. Human trafficking isn’t a thing here (though people can be trafficked to Denmark) and Hells Angels and Bandidos are considered “legal” gangs in Denmark because they keep their criminal activities within their own circles and vows to not get us civilians involved (you might risk getting caught in a battle between the groups though) so I wasn’t in any danger which was probably why the police was so calm and didn’t even tell me to go home despite me being a teenage girl alone in a forest with gang members running around. Honestly, I was just lucky it wasn’t some lone psychopath now that I think about it.
