in my head these 2 are friends
whos your mental asylum keeper 👀👀👀👀
More outlast high school au...these guys are the plastics of the school kinda sorta.
Also Murkoff still plays a part in this au, just not sure what part 🤷
I saw a post on twt saying “outlast trials is just mascot horror for adults” which to be honest made me think a little too much about it and came to the conclusion that, yes the outlast franchise is fundamentally mascot horror
strap on this is gonna be longgggg (im mainly going to talk about the first game because the second is also pretty similar and some talk on trials)
Trope1: the game start with miles getting a mysterious email that tells him to come and investigate the asylum, that’s literally how most if not all mascot horrors start
Trope2: he realises there is something wrong and oops now he is stuck, that’s the kind of explanation mascot horror writers use to not make you go “if I was there I would’ve just left”
Trope3: miles meets the mascot, Chris walker yes Chris is the main mascot monster jumpscare guy
Trope4: the tool, most of not all mascot horror always gotta have the special tool the player uses mainly to be more unique and not just walking simulators, that tool in outlast is the night vision camera
Trope5: there was evil experiments in the place your investigating
Trope6: the story telling, the way outlast handles lore is very different from most traditional horror games instead of the lore being told to you instead you need to go and find hidden messages and documents to understand the lore more properly and it rarely told to your face, most mascot horrors use this approach to story telling even if most of them aren’t really good at it
Trope7: lets plays, outlast was literally a let’s play icon most people got exposed to it via lets plays, thats how most mascot horror get popular
all of these factors should’ve made outlast the perfect mascot horror, but wait didn’t I say it was all ready a mascot horror? Will yes and no if you didn’t realise already, outlast literally was made before the first ever mascot horror, Fnaf so outlast being a mascot horror makes no sense
now I think what also makes outlast not a mascot horror is its audience, most outlast fans specially now are not if all are adults and I think there is a really good the reason for it
I think what plays a huge part in mascot horror’s popularity is how it is both edgy for children yet safe for parents, most mascot horror have violence but most of tend to be pretty tame, mainly played on non human characters with no guts or organs, most parents would let their children consume mascot horror because it is edgy yet it won’t hurt the child’s development
but it’s not the case with outlast, the way outlast presents its vulgar themes in a way that an adult audience would’ve appreciated not a child one, most people praise outlast for the inclusion of extreme sexual fetishes sometimes as a way to promote the game (yes red barrels are pretty much aware of how much people want to fuck there characters they know it and they read your shity fanfic on ao3) which I’m pretty sure not a single parent want there child to consume outlast, even tho most of us where like 12 when outlast came out most of us hide it from our parents or got scolded for watching it (that was me) but you don’t see an influx of new children getting into outlast most of the fans now specially for trials are people who where children when outlast released and now there like 22 or completely newcomers who are always adults
and I got to say that most of the fandom’s attachment towards a lot of the prime assets reminds me of the attachment children have for the goofy mascots like Freddy, huggy wuggy, ban ban, or any other slop mascot of the day
now to the most important answer: is outlast a mascot horror? No
I'm honestly not sure why I made this
Outlast high-school au 🤯
I just thought of this and I'm sure I'm not the first to do so but here are some of my ramblings:
OKAY SO outlast 1 and whistleblower finished.
miles 😭😭😭 you should have left when you got outside brother 🥀🥀 i was like why... are we going back inside...
wernicke is a two-timing fuck but tbh i didn't expect much different from a murkoff associate. almost glad miles was possessed because then open-firing on him wasn't as clean of an ending as he was hoping for. mfer...
also HOLY SHITTTT the walrider is terrifying. the way he can like... get inside and literally explode you from within your chest is insane 😭 i still don't really get exactly how the walrider was achieved, or what it's made of, i just know it's like a bunch of really small atoms that work together. or something. idk
ALSO i see why trager is as popular as he is LMAO his voice is really nice.
ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR MY BUDDY WAYLON PARK! he's a dumbass but he actually made it out so good for him! unfortunately he will carry the burden of whatever misfortune befalls his friends and family so... kinda sours the win.
eddie is also suuuuper interesting to me... the way he was maiming and murdering women, then lost access to them, so he just... swapped to men? LIKE. THE JAILBREAK HAPPENED AND HE JUST GOT RIGHT TO WORK? insane shit bro.
ummm so yeah i liked the games!! the ai in this game is way more rigid imo so i noticed it's harder to trick them than it is in TOLT. not bad really, just different.
anyway i really want an outlast game that features a woman as the main antagonist 💔 val is a super interesting character and i know she's a main antagonist along with knoth, but knoth still feels like the overarching enemy, if that makes sense? i just want more outlast women... please...
