I dunno if any of my readers on AO3 are following me here, but I’ve made the decision to lock all my works to registered users to avoid scraping.

I do not, and will never want, my writing to be used in any kind of AI. There is a disclaimer on my profile stating so. I will be putting one on each individual work as well.

This is really sad, as those who are not logged in will not be able to engage anymore. My engagement was never really spectacular to begin with. This is making it harder for myself to enjoy an art, that I struggle to keep motivation high for, during my busy adult life. Comments and kudos are some of the things that keep me motivated.

But I can’t stand by and watch theft of my hard work occur right in front of me. I encourage you to make a throw-away account to use for liking stories instead of being a guest to help creators on AO3 to continue creating free content for audiences to enjoy.

Anyway, ways to support authors:

- buy books! Having a library of your own is cool, c'mon.

- or subscribe to Scribd--they have a lot of ebooks and audiobooks available, and every read pays the author full royalties, which is pretty awesome. It's also a lot cheaper than buying every book you might want to read.

- leave reviews! These help a lot (even negative reviews can help).

- request books from libraries (you can do this even if you've read it, or own it).

- borrow books from libraries (libraries receive funding based on how many things are borrowed, apparently. Regardless of how much I end up reading, I usually just borrow a bunch of stuff on Libby every two weeks. Sometimes authors are paid royalties per-borrow, but lots of borrows also may encourage libraries to buy more copies).

- Escape pod, podcastle, pseudopod, clarkesworld--all free to listen to, and full of great new fiction! Listens help the podcasts keep going and help them keep paying their authors.

- in a similar vein, supporting lit magazines (there are a lot of them, for almost any subgenre and type of fiction) by subscribing to them helps authors sell their stories! A lot of lit mags are run by volunteers, and their money goes into paying authors for stories. (this also helps authors break into the traditional publishing market).

- sometimes your fave author has a patreon you can support them on (while getting cool extra content, like pictures of their cat. This is a weirdly common reward).

There's a lot of simple stuff that adds up!
