Mablung held her gaze without faltering. He was not afraid; fear would not help him now. He could not hope to escape, to overpower her, and to attempt it would only end ill. Instead, he appealed to her heart — her heart that was his also.
“Hel.” His voice was as soft as ever, quiet and firm in his usual way. “Put the knife down.” The metal was cold against his skin. He tried to ignore it. “You do not want to do this — I know you as I know myself, and you will regret it always if we are parted like this.”
