I recently had the pleasure of visiting Emily Dickinson's house, where a bought a book of letters she wrote to Susan. Between the book and Vita and Virginia, my mind is filled with the enchanting letters exchanged by women in the 18th/early 19th centuries, and that was fertile ground for this odd little fic to be born. The structure is a bit different. Each chapter will be a letter from either Clarke or Lexa, with occasional comments from our stuffy Heteronormitavely Blinded Historian™. So chapters will be short and provide little snippets into their lives, rather than the full story. I hope that you, like me, will enjoy letting your mind wander where it will. Not really sure where this journey will take us but pretty stoked to experiment with this kind of writing. I hope a few of you enjoy it too.

Mercedes had always wanted a cat. They liked dogs in general, but the ones their family had were loud and solid and liked to knock people over. A lot like their brothers, in fact. Mercedes was more like a cat, thin and solitary and a little bit mysterious. So when they saw the tiny black kitten, they couldn’t help picking it up and holding it to their chest. “Hey little buddy,” they crooned as they took it up to their room. Neither of their dads were home to ask permission, so Mercedes set up a little haven for the kitten in the meantime. They lined a box with newspapers and old flyers, added a few scraps of fabric and tissue for the kitten to play with, and finally placed a tiny bowl of milk in the corner before setting the kitten in its temporary home. “It’s not much,” they apologized, “but I hope you like it.” Mercedes smiled and stroked the kitten’s ears before turning to change out of their janitor’s uniform.
