i love these two nerds honestly?? they don’t fight all the time but they’ve got that kind of sibling relationship where they’re needling each other almost constantly just as a baseline of communication. also lbr some of the weird shit they do is at least partially in the name of ~twin bonding~ even if neither of them really want to admit it

there is something

so damn passive

about the way darwin dies

in x-men: first class.

and goddamnit, it breaks my damn heart. because if there’s one thing we know about darwin, it’s that he’s the leader. when azazel starts dropping agents from the sky, everyone else jumps back, and darwin jumps into a defensive, fighting stance. when gunfire is exchanged, he stands above the others, protecting them. and he doesn’t stop-- he never stops. alex, who we first meet in solitary, looks to darwin for guidance. the others-- even angel-- follow him without question. when angel turns to follow shaw, he’s already calculating-- already figuring out how to stop this, and he still reaches for her, something no one else does.

he plans. he thinks. yes, he’s on the defensive most of the time, but that’s because his mutation is not offensive and he knows it. even when the violence stops, armando’s fists are still curled, still aggressive, still ready to fight. and he’s the only one who remains tense even when he loses the fists. even alex stands straight and relaxed the whole time, not moving, simply waiting.

darwin never stays still, never relaxes. so why does he relax here? 

there’s a very interesting moment, when shaw is first trying to pitch to the kids, where he says “when mankind discovers who we are, what we can do, each of us will face a choice. be enslaved, or rise up to rule.” and just after he says “be enslaved” he looks at darwin, and it cuts to a shot of darwin’s face. tense. angry. now, it cuts to everyone’s face in subsequent frames, but darwin being caught after that particular line? not coincidence. 

just after angel leaves, this happens.

is he resigning himself to his fate? does he know that this will end badly, and yet he lets it happen anyway?

he certainly does by the time he tries to punch shaw. and maybe that’s why he relaxes and stays pliant. because he knows that this can only end one way. he knows that if shaw can absorb alex’s energy like it’s nothing, can concentrate it into a tiny ball, that he’ll have massive difficulty adapting himself, if he can even survive. and he knows, perhaps, that fighting back is going to be useless

(from the beginning, darwin is so violently different from the other kids that it’s almost painful. he sees mutations as a gift, for fuck’s sake. i don’t think it’s a coincidence that the black kid who grew up in new york city in the forties and fifties has this view. it’s almost as if darwin considers some other aspect of his identity to be his own personal demon-- almost as if darwin has seen things like this happen before, to people he knew, people he grew up with, people he loved--)

and so he accepts that he’ll be another victim of an intentional act of violence (almost as if he is aware of his status as the black dude who dies first, except his mutation and his alignment also play into this) and hopes that maybe alex will take the guilt and channel it into trying to destroy shaw in an act of revenge, or at least protect the rest of the kids the way he never could.
