TIMES OF JESUS (PART 02)

RELIGIOUS PARTIES OF THE TIMES

SADDUCEE

Sadducees were generally men of highly esteemed and renowned families. They were mainly a form of religious politicians and coveted treasure. So religion always took 2nd place for them. They did not believe in resurrection or life after death, future rewards/punishments for deeds done on earth, or that the body and spirit would be eventually destroyed. They also denied the existence of angels or spirits.

“For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.” Acts 23:8 (KJV)  

They trusted only in Earthly treasure and did not seek divine riches. Their rejection of Jesus was merely based on political reasons as they saw him as threat to their power. 

PHARISEE

The pharisees were a sect which were tightly bound to their Jewish traditions and old ways. So they were generally against any foreign nation that threatened the sovereignty of Palestine. Their primary principle was to stay away from anything that was not of Jewish customs or principles. Some of their main characteristics are given below.

1.       They were honest and very careful when it came to obeying the law. 

2.       They believed in the immortality of the spirit, resurrection, future rewards and eternal damnation.

3.       They lived in hope of the “coming of the messiah” and that he would establish an Earthly kingdom for ordinary people. 

4.       Believed in Angels and Spirits.

5.       They believed in divine providence and freedom of man’s will.

6.       Lived apart from ordinary people.

7.       They were patriots to their country, faith and extremely loyal to the kingdom of King David.

The pharisees rejected Jesus based on their conflicting religious views.

HERODIANS

This party supported the political rule of Herod the Great. They believed that foreign governments, rulers or entities would be able to protect their lives and property. They were similar to the pharisees in faith. 

ZEALOTS

They were very similar in their faith to that of the pharisees and wanted to continuously wage war against Rome. Every time they rioted against the rule of the Roman leadership they were suppressed and badly defeated. So they received punishment very regularly. Their continuous pressing for war against Rome brought the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 A.D.
