Congressional Republicans hope to cut an emergency unemployment benefit by $400 a week in a proposal expected to be unveiled Monday afternoon, according to reporting from the Washington Post.
The $600/week expanded unemployment benefit, passed as part of the CARES Act in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, will end on July 31. As negotiations on Capitol Hill are underway for the next wave of coronavirus-related aid, Congressional Republicans are expected to propose that benefits be reduced to just $200/week for two months until a new system for emergency unemployment benefits is implemented in states.
House Democrats, who passed a coronavirus relief bill in May, are opposed to the cut. ‘Let’s not squawk about $600,’ House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said to reporters on Friday about Republicans who worry that expanded unemployment might disincentivize Americans from returning to work. ‘When they talk about $600, I want the review of the fact that they put $2 trillion onto the national debt to give a tax break to the wealthy, 83 percent of the benefits to the top one percent.’
