I think I finally figured out what to do with Glint post-PSMD (ramble + another doodle under cut)
I went back and forth between just letting Glint/Gabriel die for good after the Dark Matter fight bc I felt like ultimately staying alive/being revived would be like. antithetical to the grieving of Gabriel Auberi went through in XY, and it’s possible Mew’s spirit just wanted to finally rest.
but it also felt unsatisfactory for the PSMD arc to end with the partner dying permanently so my compromise was that Glint gets revived but is just fundamentally not Mew OR Gabriel anymore. Not exactly. He was, his past lives are still apart of him in some aspects, but… more than anything he’s Glint now. He has fragments of Mew’s memories and even less of Gabriel’s, but what he does have feels less like his own memories and more just. Events in his past lives’ histories that he vaguely knows about.
ANYWAYS. What happens is that Auberi goes back to the human world at the end of PSMD. By using the tree of life (that also exists in their world) they can traverse between it and the Pokémon world, so after a period of readjustment back in the human world they go back for a visit and that’s when the plot of PSMD’s epilogue kicks off. Ampharos tells them about Xatu, they go and seek it out, its guidance leads them to Mystery Jungle where they find a Mew. The resemblance to Glint is striking right off the back but unlike the Mew in PSMD’s canon postgame, this one is… not a bubbly innocent child. It acts more like a dungeon Pokémon (which I headcanon as mostly being non-sentient “illusions” of Pokémon and not actually Pokémon themselves), the only thing is that it won’t attack Auberi.
Which gives them hope that maybe it is Glint, he just doesn’t realize it yet. He doesn’t have an aura they can read or display any emotions other than hostility like dungeon Pokémon do, but they refuse to let that dissuade them. They bring him back to the Expedition Society HQ, which uh… results in disaster at first because he starts acting like a dungeon-Pokémon again and begins relentlessly attacking everyone. Auberi is able to get him under control, but it’s clear letting him stay there isn’t safe. Some of the members are worried this isn’t Glint and really is just a dungeon Pokémon that happens to be a Mew, but still decide to believe in Auberi anyway and help them figure out a solution.
They end up bringing him back to the human world with them, dragging him along on some of the adventures they go on with Blake and Hop during the time skip between BW1 and 2. His hostile tendencies show from time to time, mainly at other Pokémon, but usually an intervention from Auberi is enough to call him off. Eventually, they’re even able to command him in battle (but at this period of time they tend to avoid that unless it’s an emergency)
It takes a long while, but eventually, the Mew starts to display traces of different emotions. Specifically making faces and showing habits that remind Auberi of Glint. They’re starting to get hopeful that this proves it’s him, and he’s finally going back to his old self, but then… well, the climax of the epilogue happens. Mew starts to get sick, Nuzleaf and the Beheeyem show up in the human world, kidnap it, making Auberi follow them back to the Pokémon world. At Purifying Cave, the same sacrifice ritual is being prepared.
I’m thinking that… at some point after Dark Matter’s defeat Auberi realized Glint was also Gabriel, and through all of this, they were clinging to the notion that getting Glint back also meant getting Gabriel back. But at Purifying Cave, they’re forced to confront the fact that maybe that’s not the case. Nuzleaf is shouting at them, insisting that holding onto this Dark Matter-infused husk of their old friend isn’t going to bring him back, he’s never going to be who he was again. He’s not directly targeting their whole “equating Glint to Gabriel” complex, but it still digs into that aspect of it all the same. They’re forced into accepting that. BUT. Not that this is how things have to be. Regardless if it’s Gabriel, Glint, or truly just a different Mew entirely, they’d seen up to this point how it protected them, experienced joy with them and became their friend in spite of its nature. And they aren’t going to let another friend disappear like this. Mew deserves to live.
This determination, like in the canon game, is what awakens Glint’s dormant spirit and brings him back. They’re finally back together, and Glint gets the happy ending his predecessors were robbed of. He gets to live and be himself. He remains in this new Mew form, but he’s still Glint; son of Carracosta, the rowdy kid from Serene Village, a member of the Expedition Society. achievement unlocked: escaped the cycle of tragedy
He’s able to go back and live his life. And I think once things settle down a bit after this, he goes with Auberi to the human world, too. Don’t think he’d act as one of “their Pokémon”, or be on their team or anything like that, I think he just follows them around and gets into tomfoolery with them. His existence confuses people because where the HELL did the Kalos Champion get a Mew but who gives a shit. But he does still go back to the Pokémon world to keep being a member of the Expedition Society, stay in touch with his dad and friends in Serene Village, and overall maintain a life there.
AND. Aherm. You know how the whole lie Nuzleaf n Xatu came up with to get partner back was “Mew still has a piece of Dark Matter within it”? Yeah I’m considering that. NOT being a lie. Glint has very evident traces of Dark Matter- mostly reflected in his moveset, which includes moves like Dark Pulse and Nasty Plot (hell I could get silly with it and say he gets STAB effects for Dark-Type moves specifically). Didn’t show it here but I think maybe he could get Dark Matter-like markings when using those moves?
Anyways uh. the whole gist of that is that when he accepted Dark Matter, he was accepting a piece of Mew. How I interpret that in my hc is that in the ancient past, Mew was the first servant of Dark Matter and the one who helped it grow to be as powerful as it did (maybe even the Pokémon it first formed from?). Whatever the case Dark Matter got so infused with Mew that it’s intrinsically attached to its being and any reincarnation of it, but after being accepted it’s merged back and become synchronized with Glint. That being said it isn’t a threat and won’t grow to endanger the world again, it’ll die with Glint.
But yeag regardless I think ultimately I’ll keep the “goal of killing Mew rid of Dark Matter once and for all was just a set up so that Auberi could get partner back” thing at least on Xatu’s end but… idk. Would it be interesting if Nuzleaf went along bc he genuinely believed it? I dunno maybe I’m adding drama for drama’s sake atp. Still figuring out what to do with Nuzleaf post PSMD
I dont usually post my hero Villain characters on here but I think this drawing is a reflection of how much I've improved on my art style and I rlly rlly like it :))
I know most of these are unfinished. Im gonna try to edit/update this as I finish them. So far, theres only 3 characters that have 0 design at all. The blacked out characters need a 2nd design(hero/villain/vigilante form/outfit) but I havent made it yet.
