Meller's Mongoose Rhynchogale melleri

A small brown mongoose native to savannas and woodlands of southeastern Africa, from central Tanzania south through Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, to Eswatini and northeastern South Africa. The Meller's mongoose lives alone and is active at night, feeding on termites or other small insects and animals.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Many animals have unusual hunting methods, but the marsh mongoose's might be one of the strangest. To catch birds, adults will sometimes lie on their back as if sunbathing. This exposes their bright pink anus, and curious birds are drawn to peck at it. The mongoose then explodes into action, pouncing on the bird.

As the common name suggests, this species is native to South Asia, however has been introduced to several areas such as Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Hawai'i.
