Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Many animals have unusual hunting methods, but the marsh mongoose's might be one of the strangest. To catch birds, adults will sometimes lie on their back as if sunbathing. This exposes their bright pink anus, and curious birds are drawn to peck at it. The mongoose then explodes into action, pouncing on the bird.

A small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata) pup in Kapolei, Hawai'i.

As the common name suggests, this species is native to South Asia, however has been introduced to several areas such as Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Hawai'i.

Banded mongoose (Mungos mungo), family Herpestidae (mongooses)

Like other species of mongoose, banded mongooses have horizontally oriented oblong pupils. These pupils offer a wide field of view, and presumably help them spot potential dangers.
