Bar Review: Sterling Taps and Wurst
Whilst not the worst (hey yoo) idea in the world, the dudes that own seemingly every bar in Buffalo (think Coles, Blue Monk, ABV) decided to open yet another bar but this time on Hertel. The old Sterling Place across the street from Family Video (and Marco's Pizza) was a shit hole. This place is definitely an up grade. 3 newly carved garage doors give a welcoming entrance and they actually take credit cards unlike the old place. The beer is similar from the other places. 18 taps, they have a ton of sausage and a local flare. Not too bad all and all. (For Blue Monk north with less asshole-ness) it positively adds to the neighbirhood and has a smallish patio. It may still be a soft opening but it will do. PS this was a live blog write -steve
What's Next for Hertel Avenue?
"Hertel is hot," according to the North Buffalo Organization who has compiled a list of all the development occurring along North Buffalo's most popular cultural stretch. They list nine development projects or businesses coming to Hertel including a brick-and-mortar location for Lloyd's Tacos, a new location for Lexington Coop, and several other businesses. In addition they give 11 locations that have recently started up along the Hertel corridor.
Here are some shots from Hertel Holiday's 2013. It was awesome to check out all the shops. The complimentary drinks and snacks were sweet! Some people were definitely taking advantage and making it a mini festive booze cruise!
Restaurant Review: Empire Grill
by Steve
People watching, nice patio, meh service, nice G&T, and reasonably priced entrees are what you are going to find at up-ish scale Empire Grill over there on hertel ave.
Would I have liked a bit of shade (read: umbrella) from the impregnable sun at 6pm ? Maybe, maybe not but the option would have been ideal. Beggars can't be choosers. Hey, at least I got the ambiance of a cover band playing live right on the avenue with such classics as Don't Stop Believing by the ubiquitous Journey!
Some random woman stumbling upon me while devouring my meal, "Hey that looks good what is that there"
me: "Um, oh hey, it's like a sausage and shrimp penne pasta"
Rando: "Ohhhh ewwwww, um but is it spicy?"
me: "Ya know? It's not too bad, not that hot at all"
Then she went on to the next table to interject herself in their conversation. Very inquisitive that stranger. Guess this was a make or break meal for her.
It wasn't for me. But it was enough food for left overs including the free bread provided. The other person I was with claimed the food was solid (BIG SALAD) but the waitress did ask if the food was up to snuff because, I guess, she didn't think enough was consumed.
