Honestly I would like to think they were academic rivals during their elite levels. Constantly competing in every possible way. But obvi secretly having feelings for each other. And frrr the angst potential there is through the roof.
Headcanon: During either the midterm or final exam celebration Gethen anonymously gifted Elwin a baby banshee during their elite levels. That banshee is now Bullhorn :)

Fate brings Elwin and Gethen, 2 elite students at foxfire together, but can they stay together?
A slow tear fell down his pale cheek. A small seed was being planted in front of him. Only his mother and father stood next to him. He was only 14. He had so much time left. Had.
He had told Gadan’s ‘friends’ when the planting was. They never showed up. Probably couldn’t face it. Seeing the sapling that they caused to be planted. They never deserved to know him. And now because of them. No one ever will
The forest was silent. Even the chirping birds and swishing wind had stopped to mourn. Atleast someone was mourning with Gethen, his mother and father only showed up to make appearances
In fairness, they shunned him out of their perfect image the second they realised he would never manifest.
Gethen wrenched his eyes from the sapling, from all that remained of his brother, his only family. His parents had left. It was only then that Gethen truly realised, that he was alone now. Gethen knew he wouldn’t have a younger brother anymore when he found Gadon’s corpse on the floor of his room, a note tied around his hand only for him to read, but it never sank in until now
Gethen found his hand migrating towards the pocket where he kept said note, his hand had migrated to the same pocket so many times before, to acomplish the same action of reading and rereading the letter that now the paper was tearing at the seams. Gethen reread the letter, already knowing what was written, finding comfort in the handwriting he would never see again
“Such a terrible thing”, a voice rang clear from behind him. Gethen jumped, he had thought he was alone. It was a woman. She was tall and her hair, styled in an elaborate updo.
“Death, and at such a young age as well”, the woman continued. Gethen cleared his throat, he hadn’t noticed there was a lump in it. He opened his mouth as if to say something in return but words failed him.
“I assume it was because of terrible comments about his… lack of talent”, she looked at Gethen imploringly.
“uh yes ma’am”
“pity really, all that potential, lost, oh well you know what counciler terik says, potential is nothing if not lived up to”
Gethen was disliking this woman more and more by the minute. He must have shown this in his face because the woman quickly changed tact and added, “what if we could live in a world where being talentless isnt so stigmatised”
Gethen looked up, this statment had piqued his interest. if being talentless wasn’t so bad, his brother would be alive now. Maybe he could save other kids, maybe he could actually do good in this world. His mouth was dry as he whispered, “how”
“all you have to do is come with me”
it was then and only then that he looked into the woman’s eyes. They were an ice blue, as cold as her words. But her words were so enticing and so with a head full of ideas of a new world, he took her hand.
