Centuries ago, Anuipuk faced a particularly harsh winter, even creatures that could stand the cold were suffering. A Harp Seal Warmblood was stranded on the island, injured and afraid, unable to fend for herself. Due to her injuries and the severe weather, the Warmblood had succumbed to the elements and passed away. With this tragic death, the indigenous peoples and creatures presumed that her spirit was unrestful, and every winter the weather would be harsh.
They believed it to be her spirit manipulating the weather in response to the grief and tragedy she faced. To appease her, so that their spirit might find peace and calm the harsh winters, the people created a tradition that would continue into the present day; the Pirrelvag Festival, in which they created a shrine to place gifts, hoping to offer peace and kindness to the spirit and assure her that she was remembered.
Nowadays, people have their own little shrines in their homes, in which they offer foods and goods. It was also believed that the spirit of the Warmblood would gift those back who had gifted her. The food at the small shrines would be eaten, and gifts left in their stead. So, the day after the people would wake up to gifts and open them, thanking the spirit with a well-made lunch thereafter. The name given to the spirit is "Asiaq" and she is well-loved among people in Anuipuk.
The Pirrellvag Festival takes place when Anuipuk’s winter is at its harshest. It is a celebrational ritual held for a spirit of the island, in which people collate together and give offerings to a main shrine in their village or city, as well as having little shrine for offerings at home. It is believed that the spirit comes to these shrines and takes the gifts, and in return for the gifts given to her, she is believed to leave something behind in gratitude. The next day, people awake to find gifts near the shrines and spend the day thanking the spirit by visiting family and having a meal together. They believe the spirit will feast with them as they eat and find joy from the celebrations, thus letting her soul be restful and the winters to be calmer until the next year.
