These two answers are the products of diametrically opposed theories of self. The first stresses the changeability of self: identity does not exist outside of the social context in which it is constructed. It is like a chameleon that changes its colour according to its environment. The second approach stresses the continuity of self: something that the person carries about with them through time and through the range of social situations they participate in. It is like a snail’s shell, carried about by the snail wherever it goes’

Yeah, that’s pretty much it, although you could also say that the ‘adaptation’ is social dynamics (fitting in to get along) and the snail is your true essence, the thing that makes you who you are, regardless.

That’s where the 3 adaptation comes from, but it’s also present in 9 and 6 to some degree. I think it’s an attachment survival mechanism that goes back to our ancient tribal roots -- the more alike we are to our prospective captors, the less likely they are to eradicate us (in theory; in practice, it never works).
