3, 14, and 37 for the writer asks?
3. Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?
As far as writing, there are a few. ABO is one—I only read one ABO fic because I love it so damn much and it’s fantastically, beautifully written and avoids a lot of what squicks me about the trope in general (What I Keep Inside), so writing it is probably out of the question.
Crack fics are the other thing that I just can’t write. Maybe I take myself too seriously, but I need to believe in what I’m writing at least a little, and crack fics take me right out of the mindset. I do enjoy reading some, though.
Almost anything else is fair game. I like a challenge.
14. What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?
I had flashbacks when I read this question. I took a course in university where, for an entire semester, I wasn’t permitted to use the word “is” in any of my assignments. Like, not once. Blah blah, passive voice, blah blah, concise sentences. Granted, writing advice for fiction and non-fiction are sometimes different beasts, but it drove me absolutely batty. Maybe the exercise secretly improved my writing abilities, but it was so frustrating at the time that I still cringe every time I use “is” in anything I write, even after all these years.
I also have complicated feelings on avoiding adverbs, but that could be an essay in and of itself. I agree in general its best to be specific and use them sparingly (hah), but sometimes you just need a nice adverb, okay?
37. Talk about your current wips.
