(long) thoughts on 10.22, mcdanno and the ending
Okay, so. The finale. It took me a while to digest everything and turn my thoughts into coherent sentences. Also, this is long. Like an essay. Literally. If you read till the end, bless you.
I have mixed feelings, and they’re tugging at each other. Part of me wants to scream but another part of me is like, there’s more to this. This is me trying to make sense of the whole thing without my heart shattering. So you’ll definitely get glimpses of each side during this essay.
First, here’s a scene I imagine happening after the series finale ends:
It fades back in. And we’re in Steve’s house. We don’t know how much time has passed. Keys rattle, and the front door is pushed open.
Offscreen, we hear, “you better not have forgotten the malasadas.”
It’s a little raspy, a little slow, a little croaky, but so unmistakably Danny’s voice.
A chuckle. And then, comes the reply, equally raspy, “right here, Danno. Come and get them.”
“And you better have bought a lot. Clara is coming over in a bit. You know how much she loves malasadas. And no, you come out here, the breeze is nice,” Danny replies.
And Steve goes. And sits in his chair next to Danny as they look out into the water. He opens the box and Danny grabs a malasada.
They’re home.
Fade to black. Roll credits.
In my opinion, the ending was supposed to be about McDanno. And as much as we did get so much McDanno in the finale, I’m talking specifically about the last thing we see on the screen. And I’m not talking about them becoming canon. The chances of that happening were slim to none.
I’m talking about their friendship, their partnership, their bond. I’m talking about the two men who put their lives on the line for each other, time and time again, without hesitation; the two men who traveled to the ends of the earth for each other. That is what the ending should have ended with.
From the full-blown panic Steve was in when Danny was being followed. Steve's only priority is saving Danny’s life. The person you care about most in the world. Steve holding Danny on the way to the hospital. Steve constantly reassuring Danny that he’s right there, to hold on. Steve holding Danny’s hand. He thought he was going to lose Danny and it broke him.
(Also, All For One playing during the scene where Steve sits next to Danny’s hospital bed and holds his hand? Yes, I cried.)
I knew the Catherine part was coming, from the moment she was brought up, I knew what was going to happen. I just didn’t want the Catherine scene to be the final scene of the series.
Because the truth is, while Catherine kept ducking in and out of Steve’s life, the one constant thing in Steve’s life was Danny. And they didn’t do that justice.
And I think that’s what I’m mad about most. I knew the chances of canon McDanno were slim to none (even though the first half of the episode was screaming McDanno, as should have the entire episode been and a part of me was like, hold on...maybe...because 95% of the episode? McDanno.)
All throughout season ten, we were constantly shown how important Steve and Danny are to each other, that they can’t live without each other. It truly was a love letter to each other and to McDanno fans. We know the love is there, but I wanted to see Steve choosing Danny. Yes, we got a heart to heart, some of their classic banter in there, I love you’s and a powerful hug, which I am grateful for and will always cherish…but I wanted the last scene of the series, to be of Steve and Danny.
And it breaks my heart, because at the end of the day, Steve left Danny. After everything.
Hawaii. Danny moved 4,948 miles away from his home to be close to his daughter. He hated Hawaii. But then he met Steve and Steve chose Danny. Then he slowly began to love the Island. Until the Island was home. Until Steve was home. Danny was alone in the beginning and what hurts so much, is even after ten years, the last time we see Danny, is him, sitting on his best friend’s private beach, alone. It breaks my heart.

*present day*
“What was the worst moment of my life?” Steve said the question again, as if repeating it would magically satisfy as an answer. He didn’t like talking about it. He never did, even after all of it happened and it was okay - he still hated the thought of every single second of those few months.
“Even after all the shit that’s happened to me, the worst moment of my life was when I came home to a smashed patio door and Y/N was completely missing.”
———————
You were sick. Sick as a dog.
You’d stayed off from work because you felt so bad. Steve was so good - bringing you anything you asked for. However, he had to go to work and leave you at home at some point.
“You need to go Steve, it’s almost 8:00!” You said as you glanced at the clock. He was laying over you, his head on your chest.
“I don’t wanna go but I guess I have to.” He huffed, heaving himself up from the bed and clipping his badge to his belt. “Okay, I’ll see you later. I’ll get some food on the way home?”
“Kamekona’s?”
“Kamekona’s.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too. Bye baby.” Steve quickly kissed you and left. You heard the door slam and snuggled back down into the blankets.
It hadn’t been long before you heard a smash from downstairs. You sat bolt upright and grabbed your Five-0 gun from your nightstand, jumping out of bed and quickly putting on the jeans and boots that you’d worn a few days ago; and cautiously moved through your room and to the door, opening it slowly. You couldn’t see anything, and you turned to go downstairs when something large and solid smacked into your back. The wind was completely knocked out of you as you fell down the stairs; you could see you had a bloody nose already. You quickly turned to grab your gun that had flown out of your hand. You grabbed it and pointed it at the person walking down the stairs. You saw that the something large and solid had been a fist, belonging to an extremely large man. You fired your gun, the bullet skimming his abdomen, sending blood everywhere.
You fought the best you could; however, you’d lost your gun so now it was just hand-to-hand. You were trashing your’s and Steve’s home as you thrashed to get to safety. However, there were 5 large men versus you; so the fight wasn’t exactly fair. They restrained you and loaded you into a black SUV. You felt so hopeless, you were one Five-0’s best fighters yet you couldn’t escape a textbook kidnapping. You hit the top of the car in frustration, emotional tears leaking out the corners of your eyes as you pictured Steve’s face when he got home and saw the scene. You just prayed that he’d find you. He always found you.
———————
“Hey Y/N, it’s Steve - I’m on my way home with the food, you’re not answering your phone so I’m guessing you’re in the shower or something I don’t know. Anyway, I’ll be home in 10 minutes. Love you.” Steve hung up and felt a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. Y/N always had their phone with them and never on silent. He shook it off and carried on driving.
He pulled into the drive and unlocked the front door, putting the food on the side as he switched the lights on.
He immediately felt his knees go weak as he saw the scene in front of him. There was blood spattered up the walls, the patio doors were completely smashed and the furniture was broken and everywhere. He felt himself start to shout Y/N’s name in the feeble hope that they were still there. He kept shouting, looking in every single room before shakily grabbing his phone from his back pocket and calling Danny.
“H...Hey could you...um...tell everyone to meet me at the office. I...I need help and I..please just get there. It’s late and...and I’m sorry but please be there. I...thank you.” Steve said, his voice a complete wreck from shouting your name.
“Woah, you okay buddy? You don’t sound okay. I’ll get everyone, don’t worry about that. Tell me what’s happened?” Danny said on the other line, but Steve had already hung up and was getting in his car to drive to the office as fast as he possibly could.
———————
He got to the office before everyone else, and he felt lonely all of a sudden. He turned the lights on and saw a picture of him and you sitting under the monitor. He sat on a chair at the table and put his head in his hands, properly processing what had just happened. He felt his eyes were watery as he heard the front door open and Danny, Chin, Kono, Lou and Jerry all walked through. He stood up and Danny offered him a hand, Steve took it and pulled him in for a hug; sniffing hard to make the tears disappear.
“What happened? Are you okay?” Kono asked, worriedly looking at Chin as she finished her sentence.
Steve began to tell them what he’d seen when he got home, telling them every detail he could remember. The others immediately got to work. Jerry firing up the computer, Lou and Chin brining out old files. Steve watched them all and told them all to stop what they were doing.
“Wha...what? Why are we stopping? I don’t understand.” Danny asked, looking confused.
“Isn’t it obvious who took Y/N?” Steve said sadly, knowing he had a rough time ahead.
“Who?” Chin asked timidly, not wanting to hear the answer.
“It’s Wo Fat. It had to be.”
———————
So I just started watching Hawaii five-0 but was anyone gonna tell me that Wo Fat was the guy from Iron Chef America or did I have to Google search it myself?
Whats better than this? Guys being dudes
So I’m watching Hawaii Five-0, season 3, first episode just because I felt like it and I decided to look what Bubu means (what Steve calls Danno when D suggests McGarrett is trying to get rid of him). Thanks Urban dictionary for the definition: “ bubu: An endearment term to use for your loving, gentle husband that always put you as his top priority; a masculine version of Baby. For example: Bubu darling, you are always the best!” THy’Re NOt evEN HidINg IT
