HIMYM (How I Made You Mad) By Carter Bays and Craig Thomas
If you were going to watch the show How I met your mother, then stop right now and stop reading before i spoil it for you...
This is your last warning...
How I met your mother. A show I've spent 9 years of my life watching. Devoting my mondays to see an episode of this show. 9 years. You'd think the writers would've respected the fans enough to give them a somewhat decent ending on a show that exemplifies being "Legendary" and "Awesome". Yeah, my trademark that's awesome was a reference to this great show I devoted my time to. So lately, I've been getting asked many questions by people about my feelings towards the finale. So here I go. I watched it a total of 3 times. The first time I watched it, i was seriously in disbelief, that I was unable to comprehend what just happened. I had to re-watch the episodes, because there was no way Carter Bays and Craig Thomas would've ended it like that. Second time I watched it, I was miserable. I started contemplating the time I spent, the hours i devoted, the arguments I had with people about how awesome this show was, and realized it was all for nothing. It made me sick and a little disgusted. I watched it a third time because, just so I can reason with it and find a logical answer as to why Carter Bays and Craig Thomas went in that direction. I tried my best at making sense of it, but it was to no avail. That was the most retarded ending I've ever watched.
Here's my opinion on how the show shouldve ended, since I kind of felt they were going to kill the mom, because Ted makes so many references about loving her so much, and yeah it kind of made sense, that the mom was not around anymore. So I'll tell them the most logical ending they couldve gone with, they could've killed the mom off, had robin and barney stay with each other, and have ted get back with victoria. why victoria u ask? because she was probably the only person in the whole entire show i felt was a match for ted. their chemistry was awesome, greater than robin's in my opinion, ted and robin always felt off. It was never an equal partnership, it was always ted doing everything for her. Doing everything to make robin happy and robin never really cared about him. Victoria loved ted, ran away with ted on her wedding day, and u just felt it. the way he looked at her and the way she looked back at him and smiled, it felt so right. i dont understand how the writers did not see that chemistry. Another possible ending would be for ted to end with robin, but if they were going to kill the mom off, then show why barney and robin divorced to make it reasonable as to why robin should end with ted. spend season 9 with ted and the mom on her dying days, and then robin comes in and helps him out or something when he's grieving, it wouldve made so much more fucken sense and people wouldnt have been so pissed off. I still prefer ted ending with victoria, only because she did so much for ted, and ted couldnt make the sacrifice of losing robin. Even though when the tables were turned, robin was always willing to drop the guy. Barney included.
My reasons as to why the finale failed. At the end of season 6, we find out the wedding that Ted meets the mom is Barney's wedding. We were all excited for it because that meant Barney is going to finally get married and change all his ways for this one person. Season 7, we see a jealous robin vs nora for the possible bride to be. The most important factor in this season, was what barney did, how he gave everything up to be with robin, and robin said no and stayed with kevin, because kevin was willing to offer everything for robin. Ted on the other hand is pretty much a supporting cast member as the story began to focus generally on barney and robin. Then quinn comes along, and it almost made sense for barney to end up with quinn. One shes a stripper, two she seems to like manipulating people, and three shes almost as evil as barney. Still from season 3-4 which showed barney and robin being together, and the later seasons, we became more invested into the relationship of barney and robin. no one cared about ted and robin because that was pretty much season 1 - 2. no one cared at all anymore. Barney was the reason most people watched the show, if Barney was meant to be single, then he should've just stayed single instead of got married. They spent 24 episodes explaining a 3 day event, and spent 1 hour explaining a 20 year event. Logic Failed. if Carter Bays and Craig Thomas did it the other way, maybe it might've made more sense, but they chose not to.
Now the mom, tracy mcconell , who we were all waiting to see, excited to see, wanted to see. See i'm sure everyone had a hunch she was already dead, or gone or even divorced with ted. I was ok with the mom, christin milioti did a good job in my honest opinion, but for me, they made her to be this super perfect, super awesome, and super beautiful lady (Yeah i know, they did that to reference how she was perfect and wasn't there anymore, but it made me want to get to know her more like most people). I think its because they went with her made it even more mysterious because people didnt really know who she was, she does have a pretty face, but acting wise we had no idea of what we were gonna get. I thought that was brilliant on their part. Here's what they did wrong, they made us want to know more, and we kept wanting to know more about her and about her and ted. They'd show mini flash backs throughout the season but they were just small segments. Bays and Thomas made us want to know more of the mom, that when they killed her off in the finale, we were like wdf. The reason being, we wanted more and were so invested in her being perfect and most suitable person for ted, and by then we accepted robin being the most perfect and most suitable person for barney, and marshall and lilly are already perfect for each other, that it wouldve ended it perfectly this way. Killing the mom off the way they did in a finale and wasting season 9 to talk about the wedding was a big mistake on the writers part. WE WANTED TO SEE THE RELATIONSHIP OF TRACY AND TED DEVELOP. Even if they killed her, if we just saw how ted and tracy developed, we would've been ok with it. I was ok with her dying, but not the way they did it.
In conclusion, the downfall of HIMYM finale, was a result of being totally invested in whoever Barney would end up with, being logically flawed in telling the story of 3 days in 24 episodes and 20 years in 1 episode (Season 9 and Finale = Logically Flawed), killing the mom off because people wanted to see more of her, and lastly Ted and his relationships being overshadowed and making the show "How Awesome Barney Is". I dont understand how people can defend this show saying it was beautifully done, and the ending was beautiful, when it wasnt. This show is about being awesome and legendary, for people to say that travesty was an awesome and legendary ending, weren't true fans in my opinion. Then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Even though their opinion sucks!
