I used to consider myself as someone with severe ADHD, and now that I have a student for whom that is genuinely the case I'm unsure how best to help her. My attempts to find anecdotal advice has led solely to ‘handicapable’, ‘superpower’ takes from others with roughly the same functionality as myself.

So, to you who are friend of us ADHDers, to those with ADHD themselves, and those with related disorders, what advice might you have for helping a potentially* semiverbal preteen working to learn how to count, read, write, and talk?

Her previous technicians/therapists have all capitulated to letting her not do anything, her parents don’t hold her accountable because one of them doesn’t care anymore and the other is convinced she's incapable of nearly anything. Both of them have functionally accepted her current state of functionality.

I was led to believe she can’t read, she knows quite a few words. I was told she can’t count. She counts up to ten no problem, the only issue is matching that memorized strain of words to their quantity. Told she can’t do maintenance tasks like cleaning her room or doing dishes, if was able to get her to them without even asking (I did it in front of her and she joined in with relative ease).

We're on week three or four and she's successfully copied bilabial, interdental, and whatever-you-call-mixed-consonants-like-“nge”. She knows her verbs and nouns, is excellent at memorizing things (she has several books memorized word for word, page by page, even if she isn’t reading the written portion and is looking at the pictures).

I really fuckin' hate when people get sabotaged because folk's assume struggling with the early steps means they're just going to fail at everything else.
