In this long-awaited and candid memoir, Hitchens re-traces the footsteps of his life to date, from his childhood in Portsmouth, with his adoring, tragic mother and reserved Naval officer father; to his life in Washington DC, the base from which from he would launch fierce attacks on tyranny of all kinds. That thing about Knausgaard being verbose when it comes to autobiography, the only Christopher Hitchens memoir still in print is like his twenty-second or something....
I painted this as a surprise gift for my boyfriend on his birthday. The late Christopher Hitchens.
Hitch-22
Christopher Hitchens' memoir was my book for February. Here's just a few comments on it.
Whenever I read a biographical novel, I'm intimidated by the amount of history I don't know. When it comes to an especially politically active writer like Hitchens, it's useful to stop every time you find a name you don't know and consult an encyclopedia, because that unknown is likely an important historical figure.
Hitchens has found so much political success in his life likely also due to his passion for travel. He is truly a man who experienced the world firsthand, rather than through the filtered media that the rest of us have to sift through.
If you're going to read this book yourself, be sure to bring a timeline on a bit of graph paper with you and mark out the references to dates as you go along. Being a good writer, Hitchens has separated the chapters by topic rather than chronological order, and if you're not following along on your timeline, you'll miss the connections between different events in the man's life. Full disclosure: I actually have 7 hours left on the audiobook, so this isn't a fair or fairly comprehensive review, but it is a very enjoyable and informative read, and I was pleased to discover that the audiobook is narrated by the author. It's always easier for me to listen a book by a public debater in his or her own voice.
It takes me about a month to read a book, so this month I'm reading Christopher Hitchen's memoirs. I've heard they're more political than historical, which is understandable considering the man's profession, and I'm fine with that. Having read one of his books already - I feel it's fair to learn about the man inside the cover. Stay tuned for progress reports and musings!
