Theory/Headcanon that Dog’s name stands for “Defensive Operational General”
He was built to generally just be a small robot that was operated and wired to only defend Alyx. The reason for him acting more like a dog as his name implies? Alyx did add on to him to make him bigger so, AI was probably wired too,
