Excited to finally be able to post progress shots of this large three-panel piece. This is a comission piece for #hmcsyork #juniorranksmess. Similar to another painting I did for #hmcsedmonton, this one depicts a naval scene of sailors at work onboard an #mcdv working with a #smallboat, another mcdv ship in the back and a helicopter. Stay tuned for more progress shots and the final piece. This isn't my usual subject matter but I still enjoyed the challenge of composing such a large painting (3 by 6 feet). I just finished up the painting dedicated to HMCS Edmonton. I had a scare while using the varnish. It dried white instead of clear 😨. As I wondered the halls of the barrack attempting to fix the issue, I met many folks who expressed an interest in purchasing the painting. Although the original is dedicated to HMCS Edmonton and will be hung in their Junior Ranks Mess, anyone else interested will be able to purchase a high quality print of the painting soon. Ship painting #wip Anyone who is an artist or has tried art knows that there are stages of struggles when painting. The first stage is the resistance to make the first mark on canvas. There is something about a blank canvas that's puts the fear in the heart of artists 😂. Then comes the commitment phobia of colours and composition. Then comes the struggle with what I call the 'ugly' stages. This is when you have put down some paint but are not yet confident with the path you are on. I'll discuss the later struggles in my next post but folks there is a lesson to be learned here. You can't make something out of nothing. Be bold and start something, even if it's bad, you can work and course-correct until you reach your desired destination. I'm looking forward to seeing where this painting goes.
