World building stuff im writing down so i don forgor
On magic sources and its users.
Sources of magic
Somewhere
Somewhere is the fabric of reality and all the threads that make it up.
Made up of multiple essences. And i mean MULTIPLE. Each possible faset of existence has its own essence. The main ones are life, death, the states of matter, major emotions and wide spread concepts/ideas.
Easy to pick up, but its Incredibly complex. The mass majority of Somewhere channelers specialize in one essence and/or similar ones. Attempting to use too many different threads of Essence too soon can be disastrous.
Nowhere
Nowhere is the unreality that exists as both the glue that binds the universe together and the walls that prevent realities from colliding.
Unlike Somewhere magic, nowhere magic has only one essence; nothing. Nothing does has a polarity, either attraction or repulsion.
Simpler to use then Somewhere essences due to its simplicity but harder to tap into then Somewhere magic. Additionally unless the channeler is a Nobody Coalescence use of Nothing essence can be damaging to the channeler.
Neither sources of magic are inherently destructive or creative, nor good or evil. They are equally matched in power, BUT Somewhere magic has more influence when used in Nowhere, and vice versa; Nowhere magic has more influence when used in Somewhere.
As the names imply sources of magic are places.
Ather Flux
A tertiary source of magic created when Something and Nothing essences are combined. It is more powerful than either true sources, but fleeting. Unlike the True sources, Ather Flux is inherently destructive.
Magic users
There are 4 types of magic users, listed in order of amount
Sorcerers
Sorcerer's channel essence from what is inside of them.
The most common magic user, as everything has some essence. That being said the mass majority of Sorcerers are only capable of infinitesimal magic. (Might just seem like good luck, or something a but weird. Most Sorcerers do not know they are sorcerers.) A sorcerer of actual note however is rarer than a mage.
The range of abilitys for sorcerers is WIDE. The average sorcerer (excluding flatliners) is very middle ground compared to other magic users. They are not as wildy powerful as Magicians or as accurate as a mage.
Magic use comes very naturally to sorcerers, often to the point they dont realize they are using it. Their abilities can be refined and strengthened, but not notably more than what comes naturally to them.
Only capable of using any essence that exists inside of them.
Sorcerers with ability tend to either die very young (by pulling too much too soon) or to live unnaturally long (using internal essence correctly strengthens it. And to be able of noteable sorcery in the first place u need pretty strong stuff)
Mages
Mages channel essences from what is around them.
Fairly uncommon magic user
Not a particularly powerful but a very precise form of magic
Difficult to begin, but once the basics are understood it becomes fairly easy.
Difficulty changes depending what essence they draw on. They can learn as many forms as they want but the more they learn the more likely they are to miss match usage and accidentally fuck shit up.
The most flexible/adaptable magic.
Mages tend to have an average lifespan unless they master use of death or life essence. (Two of the hardest to master fyi) And artificially extending their life has severely damaging effects to both the mind and body.
Magician
Magicians channel from what is around them, additionally they are capable of combining Something essences and Nothing essences and absorb or use the resulting Ather Flux.
Magicians are a very rare magic user. Typically they believe themselves to be (untalented) mages until they discover they can create Ather Flux.
At first magicians struggle the most to learn magic, the more and more Ather Flux they absorb the easier it becomes.
Incredibly powerful magic but very imprecise. Not accurate even when NOT useing Ather Flux energy, WHEN using Ather Flux near uncontrolled.
The more Ather Flux a magician creates and absorbs the more powerful and longer lived they will be. Unlike a mage using life/death essence to extend their lifespan, a Magician who absorbs Ather Flux experiences no ill effects. (The same cannot be said for the world around them)
Wizards
Wizards channel from what is around them AND what is inside of them. They are able to combine Something essences and Nothing essences, BUT unlike Magicians are not able to absorb the Ather Flux. Wizards are also able to separate Ather Flux back into its original essences.
Rarest form of magic user. Most realities don't form more than a dozen
All-around the least powerful magic users, they lack both power and accuracy. However they have understanding that all other users cant.
They essentially spread themselves too thin in being able to channel essences every way, this is why they're less powerful. This overreaching gives them the ability to see so much more. It also tends to make them a bit scatter brained. (I mean they literally are seeing EVERYTHING. It's like the videos w the Minecraft, Subway surfers, slime videos and like 3 other things overlayed and they tryin to read the txt post in the middle. Cant blame em for getting distracted.)
Wizardy is the hardest to master and takes the longest to even understand. Luckily because of the way they stretch there presence wizards also stretch there lifespan, they are naturally near immortal.
The use of magic ON wizards becomes ineffective and inaccurate much in the way the magic they themselves use is.
Wizards hv a tendency to retreat to their own little corner and not bother with anyone or anything else. Simpily existing and seeing/interacting w whats around them is usualy interesting enough
